Editorial Reviews

Review

“By peppering traditional and formal verse throughout--rhymed sonnets, artes poeticae, love poems, an elegy--Prufer attempts to locate a form and a place for violence within the history of poetry, the effect of which is most moving when this violence is woven into a strand that is personal, political, and so close one feels one can touch it.”―Publishers Weekly

Format: Paperback
Kevin Prufer's "In a Beautiful Country" is his best book yet, and anyone familiar with National Anthem, his brilliant previous collection of poems, will know that that is high praise indeed. Prufer has perfected a distinctive and disturbing poetic voice, and deploys it to great effect in poems like "Citizen," "On Mercy," "Near Whiteman Air Force Base," and the title poem. "Pre-Elegies," meanwhile, is one of the saddest and loveliest songs of mourning (or pre-mourning?) I have come across in recent years. And then there is the tiny masterpiece that is "Little Paper Sacrifice": "But look--a few quick cuts to give it arms and legs / and he's a perfect little man. // I'd give him to you, but he cannot cry from those holes, / I'd give him to you, but he still needs teeth." . . . The ominous, dreamlike landscape these poems paint is too close to our own to let us rest easy, and the collection is too strong to be ignored. Highly recommended.

I had to get this for a poetry class, but I love poetry and Prof. Prufer has some intense poems in this book.
I recommend it as something to read for interest in topics of society and death. Those are some major themes.
Don't expect super sweet lovey dovey poems. Prufer's work is serious and intense, but great poems that make you think.

Kevin Prufer is an original -- his work is breathtaking, precise, unexpected, delirious, mellifluous, and consummate in its mastery of form, content, style, and awareness. Get him now, get his work on your self today and let him take you into places you have never been before.
