In Bed With the Badge is so frightening that it is almost impossible to imagine what happened between Barbara and Ray Sheehan. I'm still reeling from reading the book and I can't begin to imagine how horrific Barbara Sheehan's marriage was.

Anyone who argues that her shooting her husband was simply an excuse to leave the marriage doesn't know the full story. She did it because it was simply the only way she could save herself and her family.

This book has opened my eyes to how horrible some men can be to their families. I hope that both men and women who may be in a bad relationship will see themselves in this book snd make positive changes in their lives.

I'm so glad I read this book. It details the warning signs that people should look out for in an unhealthy relationship, and its inspirational to realize how the Sheehan family has survived.

In Bed With The Badge documents Barbara Sheehan's life and how it turned from a normal childhood and adolescence into a hellhole of a marriage.

I could only cringe as I read about her husband becoming more and demented in his abuses and perversions, yet I couldn't stop reading. It was fascinating to observe how he developed from a clingy boyfriend into a deranged, sadistic father and husband. To imagine that this man was serving the public as an NYPD officer just makes the reality of the situation even worse.

After learning her story, I can't help but empathize with Ms. Sheehan and feel the same sense of relief that her children did when her husband died.

"In Bed with the Badge" is about a battered wife (and family) who shot her husband in self-defense as told by her children with excerpts from various friends and family. Her husband was a retired New York Police Officer.

After the shooting, the children examined their mother's life in an attempt to outline the anatomy of abuse. They detailed the signs that were part of their parents failed relationship in the hopes that others who are in abusive relationships will see those signs and get out. There was proof that the husband was controlling, exhibited odd behaviors, was verbally abusive, and forced them to be isolated from their family and friends in addition to other signs.

What came through loud and clear to me in this book was how the wife's fear of being killed and putting her children in danger kept her in the relationship; not to mention that she couldn't call the police because "he was the police." "The slide into dysfunction is usually just that; not something that happens overnight, but more of an invasive, malignant, creeping vine that takes root and silently takes over." This is one sentence in the book that really resonated with me and sums up how some mild dysfunction can grow to the point where the line is crossed and the relationship dynamics turn into full blown abuse.

In addition, there were two quotes in the book that I found very inspiring, and these were:

- "The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for." (Maureen Dowd)

- "No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear." (Edmund Burke)

"In Bed with the Badge" indirectly proves how victims of abuse are re-victimzed repeatedly.

I just read this book and was disturbed by how an out of control relationship destroyed so many lives. I encourage anyone who thinks they may be a victim of domestic violence to read it.

As a Queens native, I've been following the Sheehan case since the murder in 2008. The news articles I've read don't even come close to portraying such intimate, disturbing images as this book does.

As I was guided through the private and personal moments of Barbara Sheehan's entire relationship with her vicious husband, I was shocked by how terrible her experiences were. Even with the knowledge that he would ultimately be murdered at the end, I often found myself fearing for her life.

This book gives an entirely new angle on a famous event. I really hope Barbara is acquitted of the weapons charges on her appeal.
