Those individuals who discuss and wonder about the creation stories provided in the Book of Genesis will find Isaac Asimov's book "In the Beginning: Science Faces God in the Book of Genesis" most useful. The book is helpful in correlating the biblical and geophysical histories of the Earth and humankind. Isaac Asimov is not a Christian and approaches this subject with an even hand and a balanced manner. He is a scientist who has written many articles directed towards those wishing to gain a fair perspective and basic information of a subject. In this book, he compares the biblical version of creation with scientific knowledge verse by verse and describes where the two coincide and where there are differences. I recommend the book highly.

I'm not going to comment on Isaac Asimov's written word--he is a sound author and scientist. I will address my comments instead toward all the proofing and typesetting mistakes in the 2009 First E-reads edition. There is at least one typo on any open two pages. It is very distracting from the content of the book. If you are wanting a quality addition to a personal library, this version is not the one to choose. If you want the content for a quick read and some education, borrow an older edition from the library--I'm assuming they did a more professional job in the 80's.

I would highly recommend this book to any truth seeker. Isaac Asimov approaches the first 11 chapters of Genesis from the standpoint of linguistics, history, and science. Given that Asimov is an atheist, I think this exposition is quite "even handed". This book is not for a Christian of an immature or weak faith. Nor is it a book for any Christian who is committed to a simple life of subjecting themselves to worldly doctrines created by men. For example, a person who subscribes to the belief that the sun rotates around the earth will be offended by what they might learn about the true nature of God's world. Even today, there are many people who still choose to believe that "the sun revolves around the earth". This book will not enlighten the mind of such fearful hearts. It will, however, increase understanding for those who are not afraid to seek the truth.

This is a well-written, well-reasoned (although slightly dated now) exposition on the beginning chapters of Genesis from a scientific and linguistic point of view. While this reader would have welcomed more scientific info on the origins of life and the universe, the book held together well and provided a large amount of new learning for me.

One of two books on the Bible by Asimov that I've read. He was, of course, an agnost; he'd say "secular humanist" but does an impartial and exhaustively complete examination of Genesis, and mostly succeeds in avoiding "digs" at organized religion. He discusses the origins of the different bibles, incidentally tracking many of the ideas back to the Mesopotamians. He encourages the reader to regard the Bible as a valued historical document from a time when there just weren't many around to glean history from. I've always been amazed that Asimov could have published so many books, and yet have done the mind-boggling research this must have taken. Whether or not you have an axe to grind on the subject, you'll learn something from this book.

Many errors - it appeared that the original manuscript was scanned and the optical character recognition system produced the usual amount of errors, and no attempt was made to correct them. Where was your proof reader? Very disappointing.
