Editorial Reviews

"An info-filled short that is simultaneously gorgeous and moving ... a timeless document of one of the greatest musicians ever to sing a note." -- Arcane Candy This video documentary was produced by Other Minds in 1986, but never officially released. Directed by filmmaker William Farley and photographed by Bill Marpet, it was taped in India during 1985 and traces the life and career of Pandit Pran Nath, the last in a long line of north Indian vocal masters originating in the 13th century. Pandit Pran Nath's work has been of seminal influence to fans and devotees of Indian classical music, as well as to American avant-garde composers Terry Riley and La Monte Young, who are interviewed in the film. Playable in all regions. Approximate run time 28 min.

Pandit Pran Nath is one of the most important musicians of the 20th century, forever shaping avant-garde music through his students La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Jon Hassell, Henry Flynt, and more. This brief, yet dope, documentary gives us a small look at the legend himself. Bonus: see Terry Riley making some hilarious faces. Necessary for all who must know about the history of drone.
