Editorial Reviews

Product Description

A little over a year since San Francisco's Young Prisms debut album Friends For Now, In Between their sophomore effort will be released March 27th. It captures the highs and lows of the last year. While still bringing to mind comparisons to 90's favorites My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain, the band has taken a stronger leap forward with help from the addition another female vocalist that adds a bit more melodic touch to their fuzzed out sound. ''Four Hours (Away)'' brings to mind lost classics from Mazzy Star and Slowdive. This is a song that will melt hearts and help pass those cold winter hours away. ''Gone'' adds a more upbeat and poppy sound to the mix clearing out the fuzzy overhead clouds normally associated from their sound. But shoegaze fans don't be worried as there are still plenty of classic songs on here that will please you. The difference is this time they step on the pedals harder ''Dead Flowers'' and make you bounce a bit more ''Runner'' while still filling your head full of dream-pop ''Floating in Blue''. The band has spent the last year collecting crazed out tour stories with Crocodiles, Surfer Blood, Fresh and Onlys, Ganglians, and plan to keep those tour stories fresh and alive. Well at least for as much of it that they can remember. Includes mp3 codes

Better Days is basically the Swirlies for 2012. This is in no way a bad thing. Valuable, reverent addition to the ever-evolving world of shoegaze.

Much in the spirit of their first album 'Friends For Now', the Young Prisms have again created a carefree dreamscape, yet have evolved in their song writing ability to provide a much more cohesive and memorable album. From start to finish, 'In Between' is one of the more impressive albums I've heard this year.

While generally keeping a heavenly, laid back feel to the album, they create a lush wall of sound on most of the songs and bring some very captivating lyrics to the forefront by using male and female vocalists, a pleasant change from the previous album that was lyrically a hazy mystery. 'Better Days,' and 'Four Hours (Away)' are the two standout tracks for me. Something about the sincerity in the lyrics and the catchy feel of the drums keep me coming back for more. On tracks like 'Runner,' I'm reminded of the Broken Social Scene because they present a seemingly simple upbeat rock song, but there's a lot of great sounds and riffs washing in and out throughout the track and the production is perfect.

Overall, there are a lot of songs that have become a bit sentimental for me. Since acquiring the album in April, I've been keeping it in the rotation. It's great for drives and getting lost in the afternoon commute. They remind me a bit of the early Walkmen stuff, more pleasant than the My Bloody Valentine stuff and especially on this album, there seems to me that there's a likeness in the songwriting to the Smiths. But more than anything, I see this band pushing this whole "Shoegaze" genre to the limit to a point where there won't be any comparisons because they'll be the only ones making music this fresh, original and innovative.

I'll be keeping an ear out and hoping for another gem like this.

I've been waiting for new material from Young Prisms since I heard 'Friends For Now' (Friends For Now). I still think they're the best thing since My Bloody Valentine (Loveless), and the new album does not disappoint. Dreamy, fuzzy tunes that conjure echoes of the greats like Smashing Pumpkins (Siamese Dream) and The Jesus and Mary Chain (Psychocandy (US Release)). While the Prisms no doubt pull inspiration from these bands, they do so without losing or compromising their own soul. They take the shoegaze/glamrock style to fantastic new places, and I'm glad to be along for the ride!

2nd release from San Francisco band--Dreamy, celestial shoegaze pop fuzz; a hazy cloud float
of gently distorted atmospheric melody. Wistful, moody guitar lines drive haunted, sparkly
vibrato pop hooks with a quietly churning mid-tempo energy. Sad, beautiful, rising songs that
you could ride to the end, shimmering in the glorious pulse of sound. Shades of My Bloody
Valentine, Slowdive, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, Telescopes,
New Order, Lush.
