From the Back Cover

In the Cockpit II: Inside History-Making Aircraft of World War II provides close-up access to the instrument panels, controls, and crew stations of 34 legendary World War II aircraft in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's impressive collection. Using a high-end digital camera with a wide-angle lens and complex shooting techniques that combine digital precision with manual dexterity, photographers Eric F. Long and Mark A. Avino expertly capture every detail of the cockpits, bringing them to life as never before. Insightful text by Smithsonian curators Roger D. Connor and Christopher T. Moore place each cockpit in historical context.

In the Cockpit II has the stories of numerous aircraft and very early helicopters from WW II. What was better than expected was the number of Japanese aircraft examples as well as an Ilyushin IL - 2 Shturmovik. It is more than just photos of cockpits, there are photos of the planes, and informational histories of each. Walking by the planes at the Smithsonian it is usually possible to get good pictures of the planes and many of the external details. It is rare that you can hold your camera high enough to get a shot of the interior, and usually the canopies are closed. This book fills the gap for a number of planes both familiar, like the P - 51, and less familiar like the Kyushu Shinden. I also liked that more space and photos were spent on some less famous aircraft than the already well documented more famous ones.
As a modeler, this book has a wealth of visual information, and the color in the photos is quite accurate. This includes the transparent blue green used to paint the frames of Japanese aircraft later in the war. Many of the instrument panels could be scanned and pasted in directly in scale rubber free flight and park flyer aircraft. As a bonus there are very thorough interior walk arounds as well as some 3/4 view color cut aways of the B - 17 Shoo Shoo Baby, and B - 29 Enola Gay.
This review wouldn't be complete without a mention of the book itself. It is a beautifully crafted piece. There is a soft surface to the covers like high school yearbooks and college diploma covers used to have. The theme is of an aged document with grayed pages and yellowing near the edges. The typeface is old style - maybe Caslon. Old photos and yellowed paper with type writer printed captions for the photos complete the effect. The book could have come off as being corny, but it was tastefully done. Instead there is a real feeling of going back in time.

I purchased this hoping to see high-resolution images of the photos, only to discover that they are tiny images. I have an iPad and the iPad lets you Zoom in on images, only to discover they are grainy and hard to make out any details.

I'm dissapointed in ths purchase - I hope the publisher is reading these comments and creates a replacement version with higher-resolution photographs.

This makes a great Part 2 for the "In the Cockpit" series. The photos and cutaway drawings will bring back memories for any pilot who flew in these surroundings, just as with Part 1. Amazing to see the changes and advances in technology so clearly displayed and discussed. Even better is the connection given to world events and the pilots who flew these aircraft. Makes the history come alive. Now on to "In the Cockpit 3"?

I already own the first "In the Cockpit" book, so when I saw there was a second one I jumped at the chance to buy it. It is bound in the same manner and printed on the same high quality paper as the first book.

This book, like the first, was a real treat. All the photos are sharp and are amazing captures of the experience of sitting in the pilot's seat! Just like the first book, my only criticism is that write-ups on the planes just seem a little too brief.

I will add that a big treat for me was the M6A1, B-17G, and the B-29 (the Enola Gay). In addition to the expected cockpit photo I was surprised to see they also included photograph of every crew position on the plane! The B-29 section actually had 24 pages; it was like getting a tour of the whole plane!

If you are a scale model builder, this is probably the best book you can find on cockpit details. Each image is so clear and sharp, and there are text notes to any changes made from the original aircraft. I especially like the cockpits that have not yet been restored, since they better show a working interior and how things looked after much use. This book will put your next model cockpit over the top in detail.

As a modeller I am always on the lookout for details of cockpit layouts. Even books dedicated to a particular plane can be absent of any decent photos of the cockpit and instrument panel. This volume has a wealth of detail in the range of photos it offers. Sure, there could be more, but the photos presented are superb and provide that much needed reference detail to produce a top class model. Given the low price for a hardcover book, this volume and its companion volume (In the Cockpit: Inside 50 History-Making Aircraft) represent very good value for money.

This book is excellent for anyone whom either loves "World War 2" stuff or engineering, because my dad loves both this was practically like eye candy. Has lots of images and information on the interiors of the WW2 aircrafts so rather it's the art or the facts that grab your attention, there's plenty of both.
