Enjoyable performance, Harry the Crooner
on March 13, 2011
This CD is an enjoyable listen, if only mildly exciting. Harry has become much more of a crooner as he has aged and has lost some edge and swing, but he delivers a solid performance. He can still deliver a solid ballad, but this is more for the fans of his ballads and easy listening selections (like the shmaltzy "Your Songs") than those looking uptempos and big band swing.
"We Are In Love" starts off the set but seems a bit watered down by elongated vocal lines, and a string section that softens the edge of the big band that made the original of this song so great. He follows this up with several ballads and mid-tempo selections which are quite nice, but he doesn't seem to really enjoy himself until he gets into the New Orleans genre on final 4 songs. Harry and the band redeem themselves by bringing back some life to the set with a strong finish that must have been great to see in person.
Overall, a solid set especially for those who dig it on the mellower side.
