Pure delight indeed!
M. Donegan
There must be additional songs from the seven concerts represented in this collection that could have been included.
For any longtime JD fan and friend and for those just learning of him, you will enjoy.

This collection is a wonderful, five-star addition to John Denver's legacy. If you are a Denver fan at all, BUY IT!

The casual fan might look at it and say, "I've got live (or studio) versions of most of these songs on other CDs." But as a couple of the other reviewers noted, this collection offers many of the songs in different arrangements and settings than live recordings that have been released previously.

To hear the "Foxfire Suite" performed with a symphony orchestra _ WOW!
For this collection, Denver fans owe a big THANK-YOU to STUART RUBIN, who chose the songs, and KRIS O'CONNOR, who produced it. This fan also would like to thank HAL THAU, MILTON OKUN, JOAN CANDEE and anybody else that had a hand in making this package possible! Not to mention Denver himself _ John, I hope you're reading this somewhere out there! _ and the many extremely talented musicians he worked with on all of these recordings.

There is no doubt in my mind that Denver was at his best when he performed live because he brought such joy and enthusiasm to the stage. And he always had those terrific supporting musicians and singers. The audience responded to that. And even when it was just him and his guitar, the enjoyment he got from singing to people was very evident.

There are three very minor quibbles with this collection. The third one, which I will elaborate on in a moment, also was mentioned by a couple of the other reviewers.

The first quibble is the fact that although the first disc is a full 74-plus minutes, the second and third discs are each around 60 minutes. It's a shame the latter two discs weren't filled to the brim as well. There must be plenty of additional live material that could have been used for that purpose.

John Denver In Concert is an Australian release 45 song, 3CD and a bonus DVD compilation featuring some of John's finest moments on stage during the 1980s and the 1990s. In these concerts John is variously accompanied by his then regular backing performers. These include highly talented musicians and singers like James Burton, Jim Horn, Pete Huttinger, Chris Nole, Alan Deremo, Hal Blaine, Renee Armand Horn, Herb Peterson, Glen D Hardin, Danny Wheetman, Michito Sanchez, and others. The result is beautiful music all the way!

The set uses recordings from seven different concerts (though the promotion says eight, with one concert apparently cited twice!) across his later career.

As the liner notes indicate, the concerts featured here were at Ames, Iowa, on 9 December 1987; Saratoga, New York, on 21 June 1980; Wolftrap (Vienna VA) on 15 June 1995; and Star Lake, PA on 23 June 1995; and a few songs from UK performances in Manchester, on 18 October 1991; Sheffield, on 11 June 1990, and Harrogate, on 5 May 1990.

Another reviewer makes valid criticisms of the lack of detail in the packaging regarding the individual tracks and where and when they were recorded. Yes, only four UK performances are clearly identified and it is left to the listener to decide at which of the other identified USA concerts the vast majority of the songs were recorded. However, in many cases this is not too difficult to do and it in no way spoils the pleasure of the listening experience.

John performs many of his most famous songs, including `Rocky Mountain High', `Annie's Song', 'Back Home Again', `Thank God I'm A Country Boy', and `Calypso'.

Musically this set of songs deserves a 5 star rating. The 4 star rating is due to the packaging and information. Of the 45 songs, we are told the source / concert location & date of 5 of them. The other 40 come from any one of 3 identified sources. Even then if the listener is clever enough to identify the source from clues such as things John says or whether John plays by himself, is accompanied by an orchestra, or has an 8-piece band playing with him, the concerts are still a bit mixed and mingled across the 3 CDs instead of being programmed straight through.

Buyer, do not think that this collection is yet another rehashing of the same old songs. Each is uniquely and wonderfully different from any previously released version.

The music recorded is fantastic. From Ames, Iowa in December 1987 come songs performed by John and his guitar, give or take a string quartet. Like the recently released Russian concert, it is very refreshing to hear stripped down versions of the songs. Listening to studio versions of the songs, it's easy enough to for his guitar playing to get lost in the mix with all the other musicians on any given track. These tracks, like the Russian concert, quickly reminded me that John Denver was also a very talented guitarist.

The songs with the full band from Saratoga, NY June 1980 take on a whole different life than versions with an orchestra or even those recorded in the 90s. I dare you not to tap your foot along with the songs. The band sounds well rehearsed, and it sounds like they are having a great time performing.
