Book Description

"In the Court of the Master" is an examination of the Christian life from a very unique perspective. Author Lyn Robbins is a corporate attorney with an eclectic background. He has a deep appreciation for contemporary Christian music as well as a thorough understanding of traditional Christian hymnody. As you read "In the Court of the Master" you will recognize the terminology taken straight from the Christian hymnal as Robbins uses it to shed illumination on the biblical text.

With an informed perspective and a clear understanding of the Bible, Robbins provides insight and encouragement for Christians to live out their faith in every day experiences. “In the Court of the Master” will challenge the reader to take their walk with Christ more seriously. Living by faith is a daily exercise and Robbins offers many resources to make this walk more effective.

One of the needs for Christians today is to better understand the church. Robbins, using the Bible, history, and his own rich experience, will allow the reader to have a new appreciation for what the church can and should be for them. Rather than continually criticizing the church, as is the habit of many of today’s authors, Robbins shows what the church can be when we all find our rightful place.

In his own words, Robbins says, “As will be obvious to you when you begin reading this book, I am not a preacher. I have not been to seminary, I do not read Greek or Hebrew, and I am not sure what the word “homiletics” means. I am just an ordinary guy, a working stiff. I happen to be a lawyer, conditioned by training and experience to look for answers, resolutions, and rules. What is more important is that I am a believer, a man who is a part of the real world trying as best I can to work through this thing called “faith” as I seek to become a better disciple. I confess to being frustrated when I cannot find a ready answer to every question or a rule to follow for each turn in life’s road.”

If you are also an “ordinary” person striving to live the best you can, you need to read, “In the Court of the Master.” It will make a difference in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding devotional literature April 28, 2013
The subtitle of this book is "An Ordinary Man's Walk with an Extraordinary God." While it is certainly true that no person is more than "ordinary" when compared with God, compared to most of the rest of us Lyn Robbins is himself extraordinary. Not only is Robbins one of our country's finest lawyers, he seems to have succeeded in all of the many diverse activities he has attempted (from competitive debate to music to church work). While there is no boasting in the book, all these varied interests do enable him to apply a wide range of scriptures to the challenges of daily life.

The book is a collection of 45 short essays (average 4-5 pages each)on topics such as discipleship, the church, and the nature of God. I recommend the book be read as devotional literature over a 45 day period. Everything he writes deserves enough time to be meditated on and applied to your life.

Being a fellow lawyer I expected more description of and analogy to the legal process. But I was not disappointed because the book was so filled with practical advice, heart-warming examples, and common sense perspectives. Instead of reading directly through the book, as I had originally planned, I found it more meaningful to read a chapter or two at a time as a devotional to stimulate some memories from my past and contemplate some of my opportunities in the future. While the book was a very personal tale, it struck a chord in me because I could relate to so much of the narrative. It appeared to me the author has a relationship with the same Jesus Christ who has provided the way of salvation for me, and all those who will heed his call and put their trust in Him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intellectually Honest & Stimulating July 7, 2011
By pmh
Lyn Robbins' insight is intellectually honest & stimulating. Though I have only completed the first few chapters of the book, his thought process & application of Scripture is relevant & spot-on. I particularily enjoyed the analogies made with three types of donkeys found in Scripture & its relationship with the Christian walk. Lyn's ability to propound the tough questions underscores the paramount importance of us, as Christians, to be intellectually honest with ourselves. Full Disclosure: My wife & I had the distinct privilege of having Lyn as a Sunday school instructor. The high standard of excellence & intellectual honesty that he poured into us then overflows into this pages of this book. Knowing Lyn, its attributed to Christ & the immutable characteristics of the Holy Spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars A moving and practical testimony May 28, 2011
By grl
Lyn Robbins knows his Lord, knows his law, and knows how to blend this knowledge into a book that is both moving and profound. It offers clear and practical insights into living out one's faith. The book is filled with examples of Lyn's encounters with individuals who have impacted his life, and whose lives he has influenced. Full disclosure: I count Lyn as a friend, and as one whose witness has impressed me in the time I have known him. I have tried to set this friendship aside and present an honest evaluation of a book that I believe can benefit both the casual and the committed Christian, as well as the seeker.
