4.0 out of 5 stars versatile film-music collection February 9, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is a soundtrack album for a highly acclaimed Indian/Urdu 'arthouse' Merchant-Ivory movie.

There are many surprising and quirky elements to this recording that may test the patience of 'pure classical' lovers. Zakir's playing is colorful and restrained throughout with moods swinging for nostalgic, flippant and deeply poetic. the vocals tracks are quite beautiful and i wish i could understand the ghazal/ language of the first track but no matter, the feeling is undeniable. If you don't mind the snapshot nature of film music, then you will find this is moving, spirited and fun, conjuring up all sorts of curious and exotic images. Well worth adding to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful score for a wonderful film August 7, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In Custody (1993) is an elegiac film about a forgotten poet who is representative of a lost language and culture, and a lone genuine admirer who is attempting to get the poet's words across to the current generation. The score by Indian musical maestro Zakir Hussain beautifully suits this theme. While there are several lovely instrumental pieces (including a delightfully witty Rum Waltz), the main gems are the songs. The words of renowned Urdu poet Faiz are set to moving memorable music, and sung by the cream of Indian singers including Kavita Krishnamurti, Suresh Wadkar, Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan.
If you're interested at all in Indian music, this will be an invaluable addition to your collection, and I also strongly recommend that you see the film.
