Book Description

When you live forever, you’re bound to make a few mistakes.

Children of Night, Book 1

1969 San Francisco. World-weary Conrad Quintano should have known better than to fall in love with a human—much less Suzanne Fischer, the barely legal, adventure-seeking hippie beauty known as Desert Rose. And the very last thing he should have agreed to do was to raise her babies and protect them with his life. But even twelve-hundred-year-old master vampires can find it hard to reject a deathbed request—especially when issues of love, guilt and blood are involved.

Present day. Raised in virtual isolation, twins Marc and Julie Fischer have always known they are vampires. But they never knew their parentage—or their unique status in the vampire world—until their “uncle” Damian comes to fetch them home. The family reunion, however, isn’t what they expect. They’re thrust into a world for which they’re totally unprepared. And the father they expected to see, Conrad, is missing.

How to find him…and whom to trust? Solving the mystery of betrayal and vampire family values will prove the Beatles had it right. All you need is love…and an occasional side of blood.

Editorial Reviews

"IN THE DARK went far beyond my expectations. P. G. Forte brilliantly blends past and present, capturing the mood of both the sixties and the current time frame. I was intrigued by the plot as soon as I started reading and there were just enough tidbits to keep me hooked until the end. Ms. Forte sheds light on both the sexy side as well as the more animalistic side of the vampire. The storyline is complex and there are several secondary stories added into the mix that are just as compelling. This will appeal to both suspense and paranormal enthusiasts a like. I definitely look forward to the next release." ~ Rated 4.5 blue ribbons by Pamela Denise for Romance Junkies

5.0 out of 5 stars The most unique vampire book I've read yet! October 5, 2011
By HolJo
Format:Kindle Edition
Rated 4.5/5

Summary: Conrad is the apex around whom the characters in this book revolve. He is one of the most powerful vampires in the world, and he leads his San Francisco based nest with generosity, affection, fear and cruelty. The opposing facets of his power allow him to maintain control of his community without challenge.

Seemingly impossible, Conrad is missing and foul play seems to be involved. The only person who is aware of Conrad's missing person status is his former lover Damian. Although the relationship between the two men ended over 100 years prior, Damian is fiercely devoted to his sire. As a result, Damian refuses to stir up the vampire nest by revealing Conrad's disappearance. Instead, he acquires assistance from the only two vampires he can trust - Conrad's twin children, Marc and Julie.

In this world, vampires are never born. They are only made. Conrad defied the norm after falling deeply in love in the '60s with a young human woman named Desert Rose. Their relationship was passionate and tumultuous, and resulted in the birth of the twins against all odds. Desert Rose did not survive after the birth, so it was up to Conrad to raise the children in secret, away from those who would want to destroy the anomaly, and with only Damian to help him.

Now it is the up to the twins to save their father. For the first time in their lives, they have stopped hiding in the human world and are taking their place in their father's nest. Will they be able to find Conrad in time to save his life?

Review: This book was one of the best surprises I've read all year. Every good book has (what I call) an incision point. It is the point in the book when the cut has been made and I'm 100% in for the duration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly romantic story March 24, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
Originally posted at [...]

In the Dark is a love story in its own right. The way it's told, in flashback episodes, is a very interesting experience. Conrad and Desert Rose's story is one of passion, love, and secrets. Conrad is a strong and complex character, with a history as varied as the lovers he's had. Damian and Armand have both held places in his life, but for various reasons, are now just his friends, his comrades. Desert Rose is a survivor, one step away from homeless and lost. When she realizes the only hope for her children is Conrad, she turns to him for help. Conrad gives his word to Desert Rose as she lies dying that he will protect them.

I loved these glimpses into the past, with a gentler, less cynical Conrad. But Conrad can be cold and unfeeling, and that is what finally drives Desert Rose away. That, and the discovery of his true nature as vampire. As a matter of fact, we don't meet Conrad in the modern day world until late in the story. Most of what we see of him is through the flashes of the past and his time with Desert Rose. He experiences Christmas through her eyes and falls all the harder. The research into the time period brought back pleasant memories for me, a child of those times. I loved the rich detail included in this story, and in the way it was told.

This is a truly romantic story, but not for everyone. But if you are willing to take the trip back and forth in time, you will find a different kind of happy ending to a story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book, great start to a new series. June 30, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Conrad is a very powerful vampire who leads a life full of parties in San Francisco 1969. When one night a dark haired beauty walks into one of his parties uninvited. Conrad takes one look at her and knows he must have her. Desert Rose is already in conversation with his lover Armand but this does not stop Conrad, there's something about her that he's drawn to. This will not be more then one or two night Conrad tells himself just fun, after the first kiss he knows he's lying to himself, they are both already lost to each other.
(Jump ahead 40 years) Conrad is missing and Damian his old friend has no other options but to involve two young vampires (Marc & Julia). Conrad has kept them secret for many years, their secret that can't get out. To many things hing on this secret.
Find out what happens with Desert Rose and Conrad, who are these young vampires, what happens to Armand, what is this big secret, and who is Damian.
This was a great book, I couldn't put it down. I love how PG Forte gets into the story. She jumps from past to present to be sure you don't miss anything. Her characters are strong, you will form quick opinions of them and then she goes and does something to make you change that opinion. I have become a fan of this series and can't wait to dive into the next book, Old Sins, Long Shadows.

4.0 out of 5 stars So unexpected April 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a really unexpected and refreshingly original book. The writing style was great with lots of flashbacks that helped give clues to the mystery woven throughout. The love between Conrad and Desert Rose was so pure and beautiful. Armand deserves his own book!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! October 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Like all of PG's books, I was instantly taken in by this story, unable to put it down. I am fascinated by the characters. I am amazed at the complexity of the story and her ability not to "lose" me in that complexity. AND,I think I have fallen in love with a vampire named Armand. I cannot wait to read all of the books in this series.

More About the Author

Unconventional Love Stories. Unconditional Love.

PG Forte inhabits a world only slightly less strange than the ones she creates. Filled with serendipity, coincidence, love at first sight and dreams come true, it also bears a sometimes uncanny resemblance to Berkeley, California.

Originally a Jersey girl, PG now resides with her family on the extreme left coast where she writes rule bending, genre blending contemporary romance and paranormal stories.

When she's not pestering her husband to help her research scenes for upcoming books, she can usually be found serving the needs and whims of her characters...or her pit bulls.

Hey, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.
