Josh Ritter is from Moscow, Idaho. The son of two neuroscientists, he was on his way to follow in their footsteps when he discovered Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" in high school. He has since released five studio albums and has been recently named one of the 100 greatest living songwriters by Paste Magazine, alongside Dylan, Springsteen, and Neil ... Editorial Reviews

Recorded over two nights in Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland earlier in 2006, 'In The Dark' is a double CD / DVD set that captured Idaho born singer Josh Ritter at a pivotal moment in his career. With four albums behind him (3 of them gold in Ireland), Josh broke out from cult artist in Ireland to a singer songwriter with a worldwide career. The live album features favorites from across his catalog. 'Kathleen,' 'Girl In The War,' 'Harrisburg,' 'Good Man,' 'Me & Jiggs,' 'Thin Blue Flame,' and many others. The DVD which accompanies the live album is so much more than your standard concert DVD. It's a movie which takes the listener on a journey with Josh. Again it features plenty of performances over two nights at Vicar Street as well as plenty of intimate interview footage with Josh and plenty of color and context around Dublin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Josh. Incredible. July 18, 2007
By K. Hamm
Format:Audio CD
Great live set. If you're a fan you'll get what you expect with one of Josh's performances. If you're not a fan, well, time to listen.

I'm writing this more importantly to let you know this is PAL format, and will not play in a lot of the N America region DVD players. Just a heads up...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best Ritter album April 30, 2013
By DMH
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love this album, especially the opening. If you like Ritter, this is a must have. (Now if I could just find the version of "Girl in the War" with Hilary Hahn, I'd be extremely happy.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! July 5, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Josh Ritter is one of the most talented songwriters I've ever heard. I'm really happy to have collected every CD of his I've been able to find and look forward to hearing his future work.

I'm a big fan of Josh Ritter's songs and although his studio records are great, there's a bit of flatness to the sound, to my ear anyway. When I saw him play the first time and realized what a wonderful band he was playing with and how nicely they play off each other I was frankly a bit surprised. Big swinging rhythms, interesting dynamic shifts, lots of energy, lots of partly-tongue-in-cheek rocknroll fun had by all. The bass player's marvel of a handlebar mustache really doesn't translate on the studio records. Here it is. These are really good versions of familiar songs, but more than that you get a sense of what Ritter sounds like having fun in front of his band.

You can hear the smile Ritter sang through during this whole evening. It was a magical show. He was just starting to get his first big public attention and had, I think, just returned from the UK and this was apparently the biggest US show he'd ever played. He walked out on stage and just stood there squinting out into the lights grinning in near disbelief for a long time, bouncing around on his heels. He played with huge energy and gratitude and he got plenty back from the audience. I think you can hear that here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the CD & DVD September 4, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I had the CD but gave it away to introduce my brother to a new act I enjoyed at a festival. I then bought the combo and was thrilled with Josh's performance. This DVD is a great concert show. All the songs are good and the commentary meaningful. I played "Thin Blue Flame" over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD and DVD March 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Josh Ritter is a terrific songwriter and musician, and he is at his best live. Many of his songs that are very good on his studio albums become great in these live renditions. Josh clearly connects with the audience in Ireland, where he enjoyed some of his earliest commercial success. Even in audio, his smile shines through in his songs. The DVD adds several songs that are not on the CD recording.

Ritter's Historical Conquests album contained more let-it-all-hang-out rock-and-roll than his previous records, which came through in a rollickingly fun live show. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Take note of DVD format, otherwise great!
Musically this is a great set. Take note of the DVD format though. It will not play in a Sony DVP-NC685V in the USA. It does play in all of my PCs but not my home theater.
