5.0 out of 5 stars Great solo album that stands on its own feet August 28, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
When it was whispered in a few forums that Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd had a solo album in the works a few years ago I was pretty excited. This was before King Animal so I was jonesing for anything Soundgarden related. Unfortunately that solo album never came, and with the Soundgarden reunion tour and new album coming out I quickly forgot about Shepherd's album. Skip ahead a few years to now and Soundgarden has just completed a very lengthy and successful tour. With Matt Cameron off doing his thing with Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell about to embark on a solo tour Ben has decided to go ahead and unshelve his project In Deep Owl. Perfect timing.

In Deep Owl is exactly what I was hoping it would be; raw and unpolished, much the opposite of King Animal. Many of these songs lyrically sound as if they're from the Down On The Upside Era of Soundgarden. Shepherd pulls off a very virtuoso Mark Lanegan style record. The album as a whole has the raspy, whisky, barren vocal voice and low tuned guitars that fit Shepherd's moniker and onstage persona perfectly.

"Stone Pale" sets the desolate mood early and features Ben on acoustic guitar, the song is very haunting by itself but when the lyrics reference the hangman a sharp whistle is layered over the guitar and the effect has a lasting impression that lingers the whole way through the album. I immediately thought myself amongst the middle of a Sergio Leone spaghetti western. The whistle is great because it isn't looped or repeatedly brought back as a catchy chorus. "Collide" is another acoustic piece that features a mandolin alongside a guitar and softer showing of Shepherd, the song was released early a few months ago and was what initially drew me to the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music created in the shadow of a bygone career February 3, 2014
Format:Vinyl
This is music composed in the dusk of an outrageously successful career of music. It’s music that has seen much maturity; from an individual who has long needed or required some extra level of maturity. Soundgarden is no mystery to anybody who made it out of the 90’s in one piece. They were a Rock & Roll behemoth that devoured everything in its path. The path of destruction consumed its players and they went their separate ways. HBS (Hunter Benjamin Shepherd) took an illusive path, appearing as a guest musician here and there, contributing sporadically to fellow Grunge rocker Mark Lanegan’s albums, all while remaining in Seattle, Washington.
In 2009 Shepherd began writing a solo record that would make a name for himself musically. In the summer of 2010 he completed recording. Friends, however, felt that they could help him flesh out the album more, for it was a very modest effort to begin with, being just acoustics and Shepherd’s voice. It’s an electric beast now with bass riffs and guitar licks that will wrap their tendrils around the mantle of your brain for days. This is moonlight music for straight up scotch sipping. It’s as if Ben Shepherd and Mark Lanegan have been bitten by the same musical bug that projects first class maturity and vision in music. Music really does get better with age! Be sure to check out In Deep Owl, Hunter Ben Shepherd’s new solo album released yesteryear!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freaking awesome! December 25, 2013
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
This floored me! Ben has done an awesome job with his music, with dark and light turns, it showed me a different side of his music he could make. I hope to see more from him.
