When it was whispered in a few forums that Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd had a solo album in the works a few years ago I was pretty excited. This was before King Animal so I was jonesing for anything Soundgarden related. Unfortunately that solo album never came, and with the Soundgarden reunion tour and new album coming out I quickly forgot about Shepherd's album. Skip ahead a few years to now and Soundgarden has just completed a very lengthy and successful tour. With Matt Cameron off doing his thing with Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell about to embark on a solo tour Ben has decided to go ahead and unshelve his project In Deep Owl. Perfect timing.

In Deep Owl is exactly what I was hoping it would be; raw and unpolished, much the opposite of King Animal. Many of these songs lyrically sound as if they're from the Down On The Upside Era of Soundgarden. Shepherd pulls off a very virtuoso Mark Lanegan style record. The album as a whole has the raspy, whisky, barren vocal voice and low tuned guitars that fit Shepherd's moniker and onstage persona perfectly.

"Stone Pale" sets the desolate mood early and features Ben on acoustic guitar, the song is very haunting by itself but when the lyrics reference the hangman a sharp whistle is layered over the guitar and the effect has a lasting impression that lingers the whole way through the album. I immediately thought myself amongst the middle of a Sergio Leone spaghetti western. The whistle is great because it isn't looped or repeatedly brought back as a catchy chorus. "Collide" is another acoustic piece that features a mandolin alongside a guitar and softer showing of Shepherd, the song was released early a few months ago and was what initially drew me to the album.

It gets better every time I listen to it. The perfect soundtrack to a cool, mellow day. Thank you, Ben.

There's a lot of great songs on here, and truly some of the other 5 star reviews are good for explicit details...But for my part I like "Loose Ends" because I can see this song being in a Quentin Tarantino flick, musically and lyrically very appealing. The same goes for the "Train You Can't Win(Holes)", which has this great Neil Young "Harvest" era appeal but is very dark and mysterious, But then the song is so visually beautiful I feel it too could be as a soundtrack in that great new TV Show, Hell On Wheels, at the end when they roll the credits. As simple as the songs seem to be they are visually/musically complex. The album is not under-produced nor over-produced, it's perfect. You are really just dealing with the honesty of the framework of the songs and it would seem to be, they are laid out as the artist intended, this comes off as brilliant.
Highlights for me are "Loose Ends", "Train You Can't Win(Holes)", "Barron Robber" (Which is very close to Ben's work with Soundgarden and hits like a sledgehammer), very interesting "The Great Syrup Incident", "Koda", "The Blue Book" and the obvious winner "Collide" (sounding a little like Led Zeppelin).
Since the recent revelation of Ben's of having been invited to join Nirvana as a guitar player, there is essence of this across many of the tracks, and it made sense in his earlier Hater releases.
His style fits the genre and he is one of the innovators, do not forget that.

It's a winner in my book and if anyone looking for a true winner in all of the small catalog of Ben Shepherd material outside of Soundgarden, will find it here. The music is very memorable, there are a lot of great hooks and some I've woke up to with the melodies playing in my head.

This is the kind of music I have been waiting a long time for. Ben is a master and has remarkable talent. In Deep Owl is a huge contribution to music. I love all the songs on this album and now have something to listen to obsessively.

Love this cd! Ben is a true songwriter. There aren't many albums I can hit play first time and like every song...this one I did. I'm not big on comparisons but when listening I was reminded of Pixies, Neil Young, of course Lanegan because of the voice but Ben has his own sound. I hope there is more HBS to come!!

I won't go into a big long explanation. This is the first album I have paid for in years.... I will say that it's a great album for those who enjoy the Seattle sound. It's worth the $10.00 and then some.
