Sony Legacy presents "IN DREAMS", featuring Roy Orbison nicknamed "The Big O", was an influential American singer songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll whose recording career spanned more than four decades ... in the mid-1960s Orbison was internationally recognized for his ballads of lost love, rhythmically advanced melodies, characteristic dark sunglasses, and occasional distinctive usage of falsetto, typified in songs such as "Only The Lonely", "In Dreams", "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Crying" and "Running Scared" ... it was In 1987 Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and posthumously in 1989 into the National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This is 90 minute biography of the late-great- Roy Orbison was produced by his second wife, Barbara, and released by Sony's Legacy label in 2006. It's being re-released but with same UPC code and cover image in late 2013. That is why I'm just getting to this review - and you'll see some other recent reviews here as well.
There are already 21 reviews of the DVD on Amazon as I write this. I noted that some are really of a CD with the same title and a few reviewers - who have it lasted as this DVD - comment on it as a "concert". It is not a concert - though there are a significant "complete songs" included from HBO's "Black and White Night", "Austin City Limits" and even early "American Bandstand" TV shows. But mostly it is a documentary on Orbison's carrier from his first recording till he died in 1988. (There is virtually no time spent on his childhood - except that he says he dropped out of high school just before final exams. There is no narrator and interview clips (both new at the time of the doc's production and archival pieces by Chet Atkins and Johnny Cash) are woven together with a pieces of a lengthy radio interview with Orbison.

Though the majority - though not all - of his songs were written in a brief 10 year span (1955-65) and his career was spent reprising those hits - it's interesting to learn who is friends were. Bono (from u2), Billy Wyman from the Stones and actor Martin Sheen. The guy went through tragedy (his first wife died in a car crash and his first two sons perished in a house fire) but his music kept him in the public eye.

The film is in standard screen aspect (not wide screen) and there are no "bonus features" on it.

I followed Orbison's career as a teenager in the 1950s and 60s and still learned new facts from this loving tribute to the guy with the unmistakable voice and dark sunglasses.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

This shows the complete life of a rock and roll originator, by those who worked with him, fans, and other legends who admired him. Deserves a lot of viewing by those whod are interested in the history of rock and roll.

This DVD is produced by Roy's wife Barbara and I found it very interesting. It contains a lot of Roy's history and includes many interviews with Roy. It also includes clips of Roy recording, performing, and just "hanging out". A must for Roy Orbison fans!
