Editorial Reviews

With his sophomore release, In Focus?, Shugo Tokumaru takes his melodies and arrangements to a whole new level with increased focus, tighter orchestrations and even more memorable moments. Songs like "Decorate" and "Katachi" showcase Tokumaru's songwriting capabilities and set him apart as an established Japanese pop singer. In Focus? raises the bar and offers another great record to fans and critics alike.

I'm still not sure why this guy isn't a huge star...it may be because he doesn't sing in English. But his music is so strong, so inventive, so gushingly melodic that it transcends that enormous barrier handily. This is by far his best effort, and again is largely a one-man show -- although there is a live drummer on more than half the cuts. It's a dazzling work, with incredibly intricate arrangements, thrilling dynamics, soaring melodies, and a vast instrumental palette that, even if it is largely sampled/sequenced, is just wondrous.

The only artist I can compare to Shugo in terms of dedication, care, technique, and flash is the Punch Brothers, but Tokumaru is by far the better songwriter. Even when things get incredibly detailed, as odd meters and tricky subdivisions fly by at a blinding rate, the power of his melodic hooks binds it all brilliantly.

Please take a chance on this one.

A crazy mixup of styles, instruments, and moods, often in the same song. I don't understand a word but sing along anyway. Words can't do this justice, just listen to some of the songs (not the wacky interludes!) and see if this is the right kind of insanity for you!

Shugo is brilliant. Maybe you saw him open for the Magnetic Fields a few years ago, or at his North American solo debut at the Mercury Lounge.

His 2008 album "Exit" is one of my favorites of all time. His 2011 "Port Entropy" was excellent, but it seemed like an extension of "Exit" rather than journeying even further.

I'm thrilled to report "In Focus?" is a whole new universe, and it's spectacular.

Favorite tracks: Katachi; Tightrope; Shirase.

There are amazing videos of 'Katachi' and 'Decorate' on Youtube.

If you like "In Focus?" you may also enjoy "Ananas" the 1999 release (2011 re-release) by Belgian artist Dim Dim. It's on the Audio Dregs label, founded by Evan Mast (of Ratatat) and his brother Ethan.
