Editorial Reviews

Few great actors have been so unfairly represented in the public image. Drunk, a wastrel, uncontrollable, unprofessional, besotted with glamour and wealth - just a few epithets dumped on Richard Burton. This documentary, made at Richard Burton's widow’s request, is a small celebration of an extraordinary man whose public image may have been seen as much different.

If you are a fan of Richard Burton, don't miss this gem. Provides wonderful anecdotes from people who knew him well, including his daughter. My favorite comment was from his daughter, the actress Kate Burton, who at first discussed her father being "in love" with Elizabeth (Taylor), then altered her comment to say that her father was in "crazed obsession" with Elizabeth Taylor.
A number of excerpts from filmed interviews with RB are included. This was a stupendous actor and intellect- not too many of his calibre come along. To pull together such a touching tribute, a film which could not have been expected to make money, Tony Palmer must have truly loved Burton. Palmer was one of the last directors to work with Burton, whom he directed in the multi-part "Wagner" mini-series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! June 15, 2010
I watched and recorded this on PBS many years ago - well, half of it. My husband recorded over the second half and I was so desperate to finish seeing it that I contacted the director by e-mail and asked him make a copy of the VHS, which I then paid to re-format for my American video player. It was well worth it. Extraordinary. I might add that if you want to read the best bio of RB, Melvyn Bragg's wins hands down; it has lengthy excerpts from his personal diary that are an amazing look into his life with Liz Taylor and his most personal thoughts.

A heartrending portrait of a misplaced Renaissance, tragic genius at war with his own misunderstood soul.A life "Touched by GOD,"madly and painfully thrown away...
