Book Description

Three women caught in the adoption triangle – the birth mother, the adoptive mother and the daughter – are about to discover the emotional turmoil of confronting their past, when Kate Stewart traces her birth mother and finds she has a brother and sister who never knew she existed.

Based on three true stories, "In Her Mothers' Shoes" tells of the heartache of having to give up your baby for adoption without even being able to hold her; of the insecurity of adopting; and how, for an adopted child, there will always be a lifelong yearning to belong, to fit in.

About the Author

Author of the best-selling Penny Rushmore novels, including “A Sandwich Short of a Picnic”, Felicity Price has also written several other published novels, the John Britten biography “Dare to Dream” and a couple of company histories. Sandwiched (like Felicity's fictional character Penny Rushmore) between the emotional turmoil of elderly parents, teenagers, a demanding career and a badly-behaved spaniel, Felicity similarly tries to juggle with jelly and often feels it slither between her fingers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching read September 9, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Felicity Price is the mistress of the light, fast read. But in this book, she goes deep to tell her own story of adoption. Although the story is fictionalised, so much of it is true. And this makes the story very poignant. A really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! September 1, 2012

Amazing to read a story that could very well have been about so many girls (myself included) and babies if they were not fortunate enough to be born in a more enlightened and less conservative era. Well done Felicity, sensitively written honoring all aspects of your past.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating journey October 25, 2012
By FionaR
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
For those of us who are affected by adoption, from any part of the triangle, honest books that give us an account of a story like this help us feel more normal as we struggle with the fears, joys, sense of loss, fantasies and fears associated with the consequences of well meaning people and a judgemental society.
I am also an adoptee living in Christchurch. I was adopted in England and although it turned out well, at 55 I want to know more. The problems are the same - just greater distances involved in tracing - but I loved this book as it captured so many of the issues, the human need to know our roots, and the pitfalls I can watch for when dealing with both my mothers.
A great read for anyone who wants to know more about adoption....

As an adopted child of the 1950's, I shared many same feelings as the author. This book was a sort of therapy for me. Read more

Having not known that this was based on a true story until the end, makes it so much more emotional for me. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Adoption related
The adoption theme was handled in an open manner. The characters were well written and diverse. The story showed all sides if the adoption triad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh,so true.
Thank you for putting to paper thoughts which I have struggled with for so long.
As the adopted child and of the same age I could totally identify with Felicity/Kate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good at the beginning, but eventually went a bit downhill
The story is good, it's the telling that is off for me. I don't just mean the grammical errors, that are there, but the way the author rambles on here and there with details or... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
The book flips through the unwed Mother, the adoptive Mother and child's point of view. I found it to be overly emotional. The birth Mother highly over wrought. Read more

It was very true of what actually happened in NZ during that time frame. It seems unbelievable now how women were treated then.
