Book Description

Thirteen-year-old Sam Hill lives in the shadow of his outgoing, girl-hugging, infuriating twin, Jacob, who also happens to have Down syndrome. To make matters worse, the Hills live on the mountain overlooking Santa Barbara, far from Sam’s school and friends. His one passion is soccer, and while out training on the mountain one evening, he witnesses an arsonist fleeing the scene of a fire. His early warning helps the clear the mountain, but the fire burns down into the town, and hundreds of homes and four lives are lost. The day after the fire, in a chance encounter, the arsonist threatens to harm Jacob if Sam should tell anyone what he’s seen. As Sam pays more attention to Jacob in his efforts to protect him, his frosty feelings towards Jacob thaw, and he sees how they complement one another.

Unfortunately for Sam, he has a history of playing with matches and becomes the top suspect of the police. In order to protect his brother, and under increasing pressure from the arsonist, Sam is forced to confess to the crime. As events begin to spin out of control for the true fire starter, he seeks out the twins to silence them forever. Sam must use all his wits and reserves of strength to protect Jacob in the ultimate trial by fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What begins as a book about a boy's love for soccer and his relationship to his special-needs brother rapidly turns into something darker and more mysterious. We see him having to deal with a frightening secret, as well as a painful and confusing moral quandary. Hugh Ranson never simplifies his characters or plot, nor does he assure us of a happy ending. He kept me turning the pages right up to the final paragraph. If you are eight or eighty, you are sure to enjoy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling! August 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have read a wide range of books as a former elementary school teacher and a mother of three school aged children. "In Jacob's Shadow", by Hugh Ranson, is by far one of the best books I have read and one I strongly suggest being introduced to students of today! "In Jacob's Shadow" will resonate with every age group; beginning with the young elementary aged child, teens, and up to the adult. Reading the story to a younger child allows for many discussions and teachable moments and the teen and adult will thoroughly enjoy it too. The book couples soccer, a family's unconditional love along with the life experiences of a special needs child. It entails action and suspense while a page turner mystery is threaded throughout the story. Either way, reading it to a child or by oneself, I assure you that no one will want the story to end! In the end, "In Jacob's Shadow" teaches a beautiful life lesson about the true meaning of "a hero". Immerse yourself into the book and let the author, Hugh Ranson, take you on a wonderful journey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! July 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was a very good read. It is a great book for preteens and teens as well as adults. It pulled me in right from the beginning and there were many parts where I couldn't put the book down. A real nail-biter. And the book is filled with insights into some fundamental questions of life. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minor Miracle March 8, 2013
By Kate
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These young adult books by Hugh Ranson are hitting the spot for me. I can read them fast, which works well in my life right now. And they're exciting and suspenseful--and usually I don't like suspense, but here it's never at the expense of people. This one--In Jacob's Shadow--is my favorite, maybe because it's the one I just finished. Couple things stand out--the physical world is there, often beautiful, sometimes not, always real and particular. And there's one chapter about a soccer game that I consider to be a minor miracle. I hate soccer. Nothing ever happens, no one even gets hurt, what's the point? But this chapter is riveting. You get to step into this point of view of complete love and understanding of the game, all done with action and never with explanations. I want this author to write more about soccer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids Cry For More! November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As I read this book aloud to my class, the anticipation of what was to unfold brought audible sighs and cries. When I ended the reading for the day the entire class shouted, "No!." The children couldn't wait for me to continue reading the next day. Our discussions were lively and engaging. The characters came to life! It was especially fun to read descriptions of names and places where the children live. This was an added bonus. The children's reviews were steller. I highly recommend this crime thriller. I enjoyed it as much as the kids did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action-packed with great characters November 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book starts off as a story about soccer and brothers and becomes a mystery thriller. I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. It had great descriptions of Santa Barbara and what it's like to flee from a fire in the mountains. I liked that it reminded you that you can always count on your family.

More About the Author

I write left and throw right. I'm the seventh son, but sadly, not of a seventh son.I was born in England to a Welsh mother and an American father, and when I was twenty I moved to California in search of adventure; I've lived there ever since. My wife and I have three kids, one of whom has Down syndrome. Jacob, from In Jacob's Shadow, is based on my son in all his stubborn glory. Like Sam in the same book, I love to play soccer, though I'm not as good as he is. I've been a teacher for over twenty years, and I currently teach fifth grade. I really like my job most of the time. One of my greatest pleasures is reading aloud to kids and watching their eyes get big at the juicy parts.I love watching birds and photographing wildlife. I like to write but don't do it as often as I should. I've written three novels, two for kids and one for oldies, as well as lots of short stories and poems.
