Book Description

David Venable will be the first to tell you: He loves his food. And as the beloved host of QVC’s popular program, In the Kitchen with David,® he’s put that passion on mouthwatering display, welcoming some of the greatest names in the food world. But Venable’s own culinary skills—honed in the Carolina kitchens of his mother and grandmothers—are nothing short of remarkable and tantalizing.

Now, in his anticipated debut cookbook, Venable shares 150 delicious recipes of hearty, easy-to-make, comforting dishes. In the Kitchen with David covers everything from appetizers and breads to soups and salads to main courses and sides, as well as his lifelong love of bacon (The Divine Swine!). You’ll get ideas for quick Monday-to-Friday dinners, let-it-cook-all-weekend suppers, savory breakfasts and brunches, cocktail party fun, game-day eats, and family reunion feasts. And of course, no Southern-influenced cookbook is complete without a little something sweet. Venable’s favorites include

Party Starters: White Bean and Sun-Dried Tomato Dip, Chicken Nachos, Cheddar-Broccoli Poppers with Ranch Dipping Sauce, Cheesy Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
Supporting Players: Summer Squash Fritters with Garlic Dipping Sauce, Scrumptious Hush Puppies, Mom’s “Browned” Rice, Sweet Potato-Pineapple Casserole
Main Events: Breaded Pork Cutlets, Chicken Marsala, Braised Beef Short Ribs, Low Country Boil
Sweet, Sweet Gratification: Deep Dish Apple Pie, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Banana Pudding Cheesecake, Peach Cobbler

Loaded with gorgeous photographs, helpful “Dishin’ with David” tips, and personal anecdotes, In the Kitchen with David encourages you and your family to gather around the dinner table for great meals and, more important, great memories. After all, the portions are generous; the options are limitless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yum! October 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The day after I received this cookbook, I used the recipes to make cole slaw and the lemon pound cake. I have a love-hate relationship with cole slaw. Usually it is so creamy you can't appreciate the flavor of the veggies in it. David's recipe was perfect for me, it contains red onions and red cabbage, which spice it up, and the apple cider vinegar mixed with mayo and just the right amount of sugar and celery seed enhanced the mix of veggies, rather than covering it up. As for the lemon pound cake... OH, MY, GOSH! If you love lemon, if you love a rich, buttery pound cake, you have to try this recipe! My husband said, just from the pound cake recipe, the price of the book is justified. This book is filled with David Venable's wonderful, friendly enthusiasm for food and family, and the lavish color photographs provide a lot of inspiration to try out the recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS DOWN-HOME COOKBOOK October 14, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I absolutely love this cookbook. It's 'down-home' style cooking is exactly what we all crave now and again. I have made both the cookies and brownie recipes and they are awesome. I have watched David on QVC and he has blossomed since taking over the cooking segment. David is about as real as they come. He is always the gentleman and his recipes reflect how he grew up. I think every good 'cook' needs this cookbook in their library....GET IT FOR THE BROWNIES AND COOKIE recipes. It's so worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good recipes for the everyday person! October 20, 2012
By A.C.
Format:Hardcover
I collect cookbooks and have around 100, some are very gourmet, the recipes from those cookbooks are used only occasionally and a lot of the times the ingredients are hard to find in my small town. Now on to the 'In the Kitchen with David' cookbook! LOVE it! Very easy (but delicious) recipes and easy to find ingredients. Love the recipe for his mac and cheese! I've also tried a couple other recipes which were delicious! I really think this will be one of my 'go to' cookbooks for everyday use. It's a beautiful book with lots of photographs which I appreciate. One of my pet peeves are cookbooks with little to no pictures. Also, if you are a fan of David, you'll appreciate his stories in this book. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who likes to cook comfort foods.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real world cooking with "In The Kitchen With David" December 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover
A lot of cookbooks these days feature celebrities that also are chefs. This is not one of those kind of books. Host of "In The Kitchen With David" on QVC, David Venable is not a chef. He is a guy who likes to eat and knows a thing or two about cooking. The result is this 254 page cookbook with the same title of as his TV show. It features 150 recipes to make food and company fun. It is worth noting up front that pictures of finished dishes are few and far between, the text is small and light in shading which can make it difficult to read, and no nutritional information is included.

After a brief forward and introduction it is on to the recipes. First up is "Appetizers: Party Starters" beginning on page 2. There is a brief introduction to the section followed by 15 recipes. This is where you go for "White Bean and Sun-Dried Tomato Dip" (page 5), "Chicken Nachos" (page 9), or "Crispy Potato Skins" (page 15) and many others. Pictures of finished dishes are few and far between, text is small and light in shading, and no nutritional information is included. Directions, ingredient lists, and servings are included as are small highlighted tip style boxes using the logo "Dishin' With David" containing various information. The information in these boxes is not throwaway information, but actual quality information well worth your time to read.

"Biscuits, Muffins and Quick Breads: Our Daily Bread" comes next on pages 26-43. "Southern Buttermilk Biscuits" (pages 28-29), "Blueberry Muffins with Streusel Topping" (pages 34-35) and "Sour Cream Coffee Cake" (Page 38) are here. A number of the recipes in this chapter would easily fir in the next chapter devoted to breakfast and brunch.

"Breakfast and Brunch: Rise and Shine!" features 13 recipes that should hit the spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book! November 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I enjoy watching David on QVC and knew I wanted his book as soon as he mentioned it. He is not a trained chef, but rather a home cook and it book is meant for the home cook. I have made the meatloaf with garlic mashed topping and my hubby and I loved it. I also made his honey/mustard glazed pork tenderloins. They were so delicious too. Very easy to following instructions and the tone of the book is just as he is. I spent the days after hurricane Sandy reading it by flashlight as it brought me comfort as the food does too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Foods That Make You Happy October 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover
David Venable is a 'resident foodie', as he calls himself at QVC. He learned about cooking at his mother's knee. At the age of 12, he was putting casseroles together. His mom was a single mother of three, so helping out was the name of the game.

This is a cookbook of comfort foods. We all have our favorite comfort foods from our own families. David gives us his with a Southern twist. Many of the recipes are calorie and fat laden, but they are not foods for everyday. These are foods and recipes for when you feel the need of a little comfort. It used to be that we were rewarded with food. Good grades, a nice chocolate cake, fried chicken, or whatever dish was 'yours'. It is different now, but I still feel, at times, the need for some foods that make me feel happy.

This cookbook is filled with glorious pictures that reveal the old fashioned food we remember. The chapters have pretty borders, the photographs will cause hunger pains. The recipes are laid out with an easy to read manner. Macaroni and cheese, 'God's most perfect dish', David calls it. It has five types of cheese, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, Parmesan, cheddar and Velveeta. I would leave the velvetta out, but that is personal preference. David tops his with one of his favorite foods, bacon. His recipes contain: Southern fried chicken, green beans with garlic and bacon, cheeseburger dumplings and cheeseburger casserole, and Mom's mayonnaise drop biscuits. One of my favorite recipes is the Sour Cream Coffee Cake, I have been making this for years,, so I was glad to see it included. I have made his Fried Rice with veggies, delicious and easy, and Baked Beans, too sweet for my taste, would cut down on the brown sugar and ketchup. The Baked Corn pudding is so good and could be a Thanksgiving staple.
