Biography

Lafayette, Louisiana-based indie rockers the Givers formed in the late 2000s around the talents of Kirby Campbell (drums/samples/vocals), Taylor Guarisco (guitar/vocals), Tif Lamson (vocals/percussion/ukulele), Josh Leblanc (bass), and William Henderson (synths/samples/vocals). Steeped in the culture and traditions of their native Louisiana, the band's self-described "Afro-beat, ... Read more in Amazon's Givers Store

Editorial Reviews

GIVERS is a band made up of five friends from Lafayette, Louisiana - - it should be stated firstly that the music they make is simply an ongoing reflection of this bond. It is this connection that fuels every aspect of creation and performance for the band. They began their journey together as friends somewhere between high school and college, playing in various bands around Lafayette.

Eventually the five would all come together for one night of improvised music at the request of a friend to fill an empty slot. It was this night that a new connection was explored. The music that was created would reflect and define what would become GIVERS. Within their first few shows they would cross paths with Dirt Projectors, who would eventually ask them to tour the east coast in the fall of 2009. Since then they have made touring a major priority, only breaking to record their first full length album, due this spring.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Uplifting! July 14, 2011

The first song that really drew me in was "Up Up Up" I still really love that song. As far as the rest of the album goes...as I listened to the album over and over, each song really is so great! This album is such an uplifting album, with a great feeling to the whole thing. It reminds me of having a great day with the sun shining. It gives you a warm glow :)

Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to feel alive!

5.0 out of 5 stars A joyous and innovative sound June 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I stumbled across this album by accident, and bought it on a whim. I am thrilled and extremely pleased by this intertwining of fate. I became even more excited upon learning the band had formed in Shreveport, just a couple hours away from my stompin' grounds!

The music is energetic, exciting and uplifting. Experimental to an extent, yet retaining a certain vibrant pop sensibility. If comparisons could help give clarity to a groups unique soul I would compare them to The Dirty Projectors and Portugal. The man but don't let this fool you - Givers are a band in their own class.

I can only hope other weary travelers stumble across this album as I did, on that neverending quest for great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible music July 15, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I rarely write reviews but I'd like this band to do well so I feel compelled to say something. This is just such a great album, I'm not even 75% done listening and I'm already in love with it. I would say they have elements of passion pit and mgmt but their vocals surpass both bands I believe. Lots of great harmonious vocals coupled with phenomenal beats and upbeat tempos make this album well worth the buy. I really hope they do well because I'd love to hear more. If you're just going to sample a few tracks to see if you like it...try Up Up Up, Noche Nada and maybe In My Eyes...I think that's a pretty good representation of their overall sound throughout the ablum. BOTTOM LINE: If you like creative, upbeat and talented musicians, you will love this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bold new sound for good times! July 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Under full disclosure I have to let you know that Givers singer and guitarist Taylor Guarisco is my cousins son. That being said I think that I can still offer a fairly objective review of their music. Let me just say that it is really different than most mainstream music. It is very upbeat and fun to listen to regardless of your age.

CAUTION: May increase your speed while running, decrease in awareness of pain. WARNING: Much better to listen to while smiling. Do not listen to if you're an unhappy person and intend to stay that way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric October 30, 2011

Catchy songs. The first six songs are immediately enticing. The remaining four grow on you like kudzu.
Tiff Lamson and Taylor Guarisco match voices perfectly, and I still can't tell which I like better. When Ceiling of Plankton made its rounds two years ago, I was struck. Saw You First and the rest of the LP came soon after, and all I could do was wait until an EP came out.
Atlantic and Go Out At Night seemed too long at first, but now I find myself listening to the last few songs (including In My Eyes and Words as well) more than the dancy first half.

Best star on the album? Ripe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossibly happy Zydeco/Afropop October 23, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you're into Vampire Weekend or Paul Simon's Graceland era, you must own this album. Every song on it will make you smile.

The tracks are all bursting with positive energy. The Givers jump from one catchy riff to the next with wild abandon. They're on to another idea long before you're finished tapping your foot to the previous one.

A great cd from start to finish. Knew it had something different that makes it unique...a little bit of bayou in there. Hope they play the midwest soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
One of the most well-rounded albums I've heard in a long time. The sound they come closest to would be Vampire Weekend, but with a more distinct style. Love it.
