Over the past 40 years, Keith Jarrett has come to be recognized as one of the most creative musicians of our times - universally acclaimed as an improviser of unsurpassed genius; a master of jazz piano; a classical keyboardist of great depth; and as a composer who has written hundreds of pieces for his various jazz groups, plus extended works for orchestra, soloist, and chamber ... There is another review written in Spanish that I can read & understand the basics. So here is a review written in English. Don't show this to your English teacher. Keith Jarrett has an interesting career that it would take too long to write so here are some basics: He did play with Miles Davis with electrical keyboards but with his own work he devotes himself mostly with acoustic keyboards. He is mostly known for his solo piano improvs, jazz trios or larger, later standard classical music from Bach to Shostakvich, but this CD "In The Light" is one of his earlier attempts of writing modern classical music. Most of the titles give away the main idea: "Fughata For Harpsichord", "Brass Quintet", "String Quartet", & "Short Pieces For Guitar & Strings" while others like "Metamorhosis" for solo flute & strings, "A Pagan Hymn" for solo piano via Keith Jarrett, "Crystal Moment" for 4 celli & 2 trombones, & "In The Cave, In The Light" (sounds rather Platonic) for piano, gong, percussion with strings. Most of the pieces are somewhat tonal but on the path to atonal. Keith Jarrett wrote an interesting intro about how he wrote these sets of music over a period of 6 years & to not hold him to any style, but listen to digest. I am glad that he wrote this for it explains many things. This CD will give you another element of Keith Jarrett but maybe not for the new comer to his standard jazz or classical music.

I fished this out of the jazz section, thinking it was a jazz album. I am slways telling people the uselessness of genre labels, and In The Light reminds me to practice what I preach.

And reminds me in the best way: This is orchestral music, full or horns, murky, ambiguous textures, and of course, Keith Jarret's piano, though not in the quantity you may think.

Which is just fine, because it is the master pianist who choose this direction, which is perfectly done. This music reminds me of the work of film composer Jerry Fielding, who scored movies such as the 1971 Straw Dogs. Jarret's music is hear is not nearly as dark as Fielding's, but the fluidity of the tone color, the way the instruments seem to meld like wet paint on canvas, is a quality i love, and one In The Light shares with Fielding.

Get it and listen repeatedly. It grows on you in its many colors.

The 70's were heady times. If you look at all the brilliant ECM recordings that came out then, it will make you swoon. Here are just a few of ECMs offerings from that time as an example:

Corea's "Piano Improvisations 1 & 2" 1971
Corea's "Return To Forever" 1972
Lande & Garbarek's "Red Lanta" 1973
Rypdal's "Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away" 1974...

Jarrett had created one of his greatest solo piano recordings in 1971 - "Facing You".
Also in 1971 there was a wonderful duet recording with Jack DeJohnette - "Ruta & Daitya".
In 1974, "Belonging" , Jarrett's first with his Scandinavian Quartet, came out.
And to think that "Luminessence - Music For String Orchestra & Saxophone Composed By Keith Jarrett and Saxophone Improvisations by Jan Garbarek" also came out in 1974. "Koln Concert" and "Arbour Zena" came out in 1975.

So what does this say about Jarrett? That he was, and still is, terribly prolific, working in many different formats - solo, duo, quartet, and with strings and various ensembles. And so that is the case here with "In The Light". This is a recording with great variety and exploration. One very worthy of sitting in your collection. I particularly like the piece "In The Cave, In The Light" .
