The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook

Biography

Declan MacManus is known as one of the most idiosyncratic new wave performers, under his alias Elvis Costello. The UK-born singer-songwriter had a string of Top 30 chart hits in the UK in the late 70s and early 80s, though his work throughout his career has always gathered critical respect.

Although he was initially marketed as a punk, his music originally seemed to sound more like ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Costello Store

Editorial Reviews

In the cold cynical world of Hollywood, music will often save the day. For film directors of every sprocket, their hero is cool customer Elvis Costello. "In Motion Pictures" collects the best of those anti-heroic moments, with Elvis Costello songs as heard in big films and little films, some featured, some in the background, filling in the story, all of them the unmistakable sound of our modern-day Elvis. The tunes are both familiar, but given a new frame, and rare gems written exclusively for the film.

"In Motion Pictures" includes 15 Elvis Costello songs featured in blockbuster and cult films, personally selected by Elvis himself. The films include E.T., The Godfather Part III, Notting Hill, The Big Lebowski, and Grace Of My Heart.

Also included is an illuminating essay by a mysterious Tinseltown insider, who provides the backdrop to the world of Elvis Costello, "In Motion Pictures."

There is absolutely no point to this CD. The songs don't even fit well next to each other. If you have all the songs, just piece together a movie themed playlist if you feel the need (but I really wonder why that is appealing). As far as movie songs go, they left off two that could have made this better. Never Fall in Love Again from one of the Austin Powers movies and Party Party from some English movie back in the 80s. There are way better EC albums and compilations to buy that's for sure.

Depending how familiar one is with Ec's work is likely how you will judge this compilation. I've been a huge Elvis fan since summer of 78 and I'm very pleasantly surprised by You Stole My Bell & Sparkling Day melodramatic ballads which have a lot more life, melody, and invention to them than say the North album, the only album of his I don't really care for.Lovers Walk and Crawling To The USA are terrific rockers as well.Elvis has never been the critical darling Springsteen &Dylan are. I don't wanna bad mouth either one who have made their mark with a great body of work(,a lot of mediocrity and rewrites though), but for melody, searing lyrical brilliance, astonishing variety, pop balladeer of the highest order, heckuva country singer and visceral rocker, why Elvis mops the floor with both, and only Sir Paul can touch him in most of those areas and catalog.

If you love Elvis and are constantly amused by hearing his songs show up in movies, you might find this album worthwhile.

EC has a great collection across his career, all featured in movies that these songs were used for. Days is a favorite.

This was a Christmas request from my son, so I know next to nothing about it, but he's very happy!

Wow, another Elvis slice and dice
If it had "Sitting" from "The Invention of Lying" I'd buy it.
