The paintings in this book are so beautiful and full and tell so much. You can see grandmothers rocking babies, children playing with each other, every little detail so sharply rendered. Look at the plates of empanadas in the kitchen and the family gathered for a backyard party. The honest, personal text--given in both English and Spanish--make this perfect. Great for anyone who wants to learn about family life as well as another culture. My[...] daughter loves to pore over these pictures. Highly recommended!

This story is about the memories of a little girl named Carmen and her recapturing of fond childhood memories of what it was like living in her hometown Kingsville, Texas. This book contains beautiful paints that the author painter herself and it is basically like flipping through a family photo album. This book really captures the essence of Mexican culture and heritage and displays scenes that are cherished holidays among this culture such as Thanksgiving and Easter, and how it is celebrated within their culture. The paintings help you to really experience a visit to the Garcia home. This book helps to show children what the Mexican heritage is like and could be a segue to get children to think about what their own traditions and heritage are like and how they would show them to other people

Carmen Lomas Garza is a painter and children's book illustrator who does large-scale paintings based on her life growing up Mexican-American in Texas in the 1950s. Her paintings illustrate moments from her childhood, such as family meals and holidays. I saw one of her large paintings in the children's wing of a hospital where I had taken my 3-year-old for a checkup, and did a little research on her and found her books. My kid loves them; she loves to look at all the details in the illustrations and imagine what each of the people's names are and what their relationships are to each other. To be clear, these are not really storybooks: There's no plot or dialogue. Each page is a different illustration of a moment in the author's childhood, with a little bit of text from the author explaining what's going on in the picture. Parents should be aware that these are realistic depictions of childhood in the 50s and there is some very slightly graphic content, for example her uncle bringing a freshly killed rabbit into the kitchen to cook for dinner, a picture that includes a little blood from the rabbit. But mostly these are pictures celebrating family.

In My Family/En Mi Familia is a great book. It is a great way for anyone to learn about the Mexican heritage and various traditions and celebrations that they share. I have lived in San Antonio for the last 16 years and have never fully known much about the Mexican/American's and their traditions and the meaning behind their celebrations. This was a really easy book to read. The author shares personal experiences and things that are special to her about her heritage and brings them to life with beautiful, detailed illustrations. I learned SO much in the short amount of time to read this book about the culture and traditions and found it fascinating. It gave a new meaning to me on how I view the Mexican/American culture now. It is a great teaching tool as well. I will most definitely use it in my future classroom!

This Is one of those children's books where almost everyone can relate to, if you are from South Texas with the Latino heritage. As I was reading this book I started to see all the get togethers, bbq's, and just spending time with the family kept popping in to my head. Reading this also had me remember the old area I used to live in when I was in a densely populated in the Mexican American people where what was shown in the book was what I got to experience as a child. I also loved all the colors used that represent the heritage as well. It was something to me that I felt was on point in the matter that the colors were ones that I had seen as a kid, and still see when I see my family.

I purchased this book when I was a Spanish teacher at a high school in Milwaukee. My students enjoyed the artwork and it gave me a context to bring the Mexican culture and Spanish language alive. Now that I'm working in research, I gifted the book to some very poor children in Colombia that I visit every year. Not only is it a great addition to the in-home library we started for them, but they also have the English version of the story to learn and practice. Overall, a wholesome, good story. I recommend this and other books by this author for children of all backgrounds and most ages (I enjoyed it as an adult!).
