Editorial Reviews

Product Description

It would be clich‚ to say that Pharrell Williams needs no introduction. This Grammy-winning production wizard has been making the soundtrack to your days, nights and everything in between for the past few years. He is not only a master at producing, but also a member of the band N.E.R.D, the CEO of Star Trak Records, the CEO of a new clothing label BBC, CEO of his own sneaker line called Ice Cream and the spokes model for the Louis Vuitton fall campaign. Heralded by the press and the industry as a force to be reckoned with, Pharrell has created his own individual masterpiece, called `In My Mind.' The album highlights the diversified man. Introducing Skateboard P and Pharrell Williams. Both personas are represented on this album; 7 rap songs and 7 R&B songs. Enjoy, its another masterpiece.

A sort of King Midas of the US pop firmament, as one half of hit-making cartel The Neptunes and a founding member of NERD, Pharrell Williams boasts a remarkable track record. Roughly one half hip-hop and one half R&B, In My Mind follows the magic formula that’s seen Williams reinvigorate the careers of everyone from Britney and *NSYNC to Snoop Dogg and Nelly, drawing on music styles as disparate as metal and reggaeton and shaping them together with adventurous effect. In particular, the marching-band rhythms of "Keep It Playa" and the booming, atonal space-funk of "Can I Have It Like That" - featuring a brief cameo by Gwen Stefani - are startling examples of Williams’ production wizardry.

As an album, it’s not without its flaws: "Our Father" might wash with the God-fearing hip-hop fraternity, but more cynical audiences might balk at the Williams’ assertion that "Jesus is my playa"; meanwhile a duet with Jay-Z, "Young Girls", shows up the occasional weaknesses of his flow. No matter, though – you’ll buy this for the productions, and without exception, they gleam. – Louis Pattison

I have very mixed feelings on Pharrell as an artist.
Now, its probably not good to review an album without listening to the whole thing, but I just HAVE to say that I LOVE the song 'That Girl' with Snoop!
Standout songs include: "How Does It Feel"-The beat is great and Pharrell's flow works well here.

Who knows what really goes on in Pharrell's mind? In this, his first solo album, Pharrell (half of The Neptunes and chief N.E.R.D.) calls on some of the hottest talents in Hip Hop and R&B, and the result is this fifteen song extravaganza, part Hip Hop, part R&B, all with the slick production and smooth mixing that made him a music phenomenon.

Three singles have already been released from this album, at least two of which are guaranteed instant hits. "Can I Have It Like That" features the one and only Gwen Stefani, and you couldn't want a better lead off track for an album. The other heat generating single is "Number I" with red hot Kanye West, and this one is tucked away near the end of the album for a hit "sandwich" that'll be pretty hard to beat. The third single "Angel" was released in the UK and is one of the tracks that Pharrell handles on his own, falsetto and all.

Watch out also for "How Does It Feel" a steamy Hip Hop track (Remember that this album has a parental advisory warning); "Raspy Sh!t"; "Keep It Playa" with Slim Thug (this one has a great hook); "That Girl" featuring Snoop Dogg; "Young Girl" with Jay-Z; and the last track "Show You How to Hustle" featuring Lauren, where he goes by his rap name Skateboard P.

As if that weren't enough, fans of "The Artist Formerly known as Prince" will absolutely love "Baby" featuring Nelly, and for a nice spiritual touch, Pharrell gives a shout out to the Almighty giving thanks for his talents.

Do you really need more reasons than these to get this album?

I was first introduced to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who are better known as The Neptunes, when they wrote and produced 2 tracks on SWV's "New Beginning" CD. The best song of the 2 tracks, "Use Your Heart" ended up being the 2nd single from that CD. Right around the same time, I also found out that they produced Noreaga's "Super Thug" and Mase's "Lookin' At Me". They weren't as well known at the time but before you know it they were jumpin' all over well known artists tracks and you saw their name all over the place. In my opinion, the best beat that they have ever produced was Clipse's "Grindin'". That track made producers all over the world step their game up. Of course, when you do a lot of producing and writing, the producers and writers themselves want to take a stab at the industry. N.E.R.D. was a group composed of Pharrell, Chad and one of their boys Shay and they released "In Search Of..." in the year 2000. Although, I hated "Lapdance" which was the 1st single from the CD, I did enjoy tracks like "Rock Star", "Bobby James", and "Am I High" w/Malice from Clipse. While producing, Pharrell would also rap and sing hooks for the artists that he was producing for and even went as far as having verses on some of these artists' tracks.

The best that I have heard Pharrell on the microphone has to be the original version and remix to "Drop It Like It's Hot". The original version was with Snoop and the remix also featured Jay-Z with Snoop and Pharrell. The Clipse's current single, "Mr. Me Too", also features a nice verse from Pharrell as well.

Im sorry but some people just don't truly understand this dude talent. Of course this aint no young joc or young jeezy or young whoeva da f**k most people are into nowadays. Pharrell iz on a whole nutha level. He just blends different genders of music together...almost like he's paintin a picture. Another thing i want to point out iz the fact that his rappin has stepped up...he has gone from producer to producer/rapper 4sho. The album to me is exactly what i expected...pharrell being creative wit his beats and his lyrics. Songs that i absolutely luv iz...How Does it Feel, thats the song i play when i first come out da house ready to start my day; You Can Do it To iz a song i really appreciate cuz I also luv to make beats on my computer and by him makin that song he lets people know how his lifestyle changed from back in the day compared to now and that lets me know i have to be patient cause...i can do it too lol. But my fave song on there iz...Best Friend where he talks about bein a kid from virgina without any kinda direction and how his grandma directed him in the path of music...he also talks about how he met Chad in the process and how Chad was there since the beginning. Stuff like dat makes him so different from other artists cause the way i see it i aint always tryin to bang out...i wanna let my car seat back and coast or bring my girl along and put a luv song in her ear that will make her smile. This album offers all dat meaning i aint gotta change my disk out anytime soon cause he got a lil street music, and r&b. But he did miss me on a couple songs like dat song wit nelly...i like it but nelly didn't benefit that song at all, just a bad collabo to me. the otha song iz Angel...im tryin to feel it but its gonna take some time overall u should definitly buy it cause he just got some contagious music im sorry. I been followin him for years...ever since kelis first came out...he still goin strong. I got three words..Buy It Now.

2010? Why not? This album's release date has been postponed so many times that fans are giving up hope on ever getting their hands on it. I gess the record company are not happy about the performance of the first 2 singles in the US, "Can I Have It Like That" and "Angel" (both... Read More

I can definitely understand that. I cannot wait until it comes out though. The Neptunes are so talented and their music is just legendary and unique. Also, I must say that their melodies are timeless and beautiful! Thanks for the update on the CD. If there is so much buzz on this album, I... Read More
