The finger puppet is great way to hold a baby's interest from page to page. She watches it wiggle and recognizes it as it re-appears after every page turn. The puppet is facing forward and has big eyes, which is an advantage over some of the other Gillingham puppet books.
The text is perfect for a baby's attention span, both in the length of each page and in the number of pages. It's short and spare, which means you'll have to read the book more interactively as the child gets older. But that's really for the better.
Each picture has a distinct and bold color scheme rather than just a hodge-podge of colors. This works well against the recurring puppet and makes each page a new experience for a baby that is learning to perceive colors. I haven't found another infant book that introduces color so effectively. There are bugs and snails and other discrete images on each page -- content to point at and talk about as the child becomes more perceptive.
It's probably odd to write a review that's many times longer than the book itself, but I think there is huge value in getting a baby interested in reading. This little book is a wonderful way to start.

My five month old is facinated by the finger puppet. My only complaint is that there isn't much substance to the text (but that probably matters more to me than to my son).Published 6 months ago by Margaret G
