Editorial Reviews

Mainly recorded in Finland and mixed and mastered in Italy, In Paradisum was produced by Timo Tolkki. References to his musical past are obviously there, but it would be a mistake to consider Symfonia a new version of Stratovarius. Featuring a mix of performers from bands such as Stratovarius, Angra, Helloween & Sonata Arctica, every member of the band brings new color and their own personality and references. Angra fans will surely consider this album one of the best episodes for Brazilian singer Andre Matos since Angel's Cry and Holy Land . Echoes of Rainbow and classic metal are fused with the best of the last decade symphonic and progressive metal.

Yet what keeps you hooked is that all important sense of fun.

Speaking of Matos, the vocalist does an impressive job here, and it's always good to hear his unique voice in a progressive power metal setting.

That's all I have to say about this album and how it kinda rips off of a good band.

Ludicrous, overblown, pompous and powerful are all adjectives that can be applied to successful power metal if it's done well and here Symfonia tick all the boxes with a release that is as colourful, melodic and frenetic as you would expect from members of Stratovarius, Angra, Helloween and Sonata Arctica but there's one word yet missing from the list, and that word is FUN. Like the finale of a particularly catchy musical number, the canvas that Symfonia work from is huge and every song explodes like so many coloured glitter bombs whilst the music is both powerful and distressingly catchy, sticking in your mind whether you want it to or not proving that the gaudily coloured and stylised artwork is the perfect representation of the content of `In Paradisium'.

Eschewing anything as subtle as an introduction, Symfonia rock from the very first moment of the album when guitarist Timo Tolkki unleashes a riff that is pure old school metal backed by Uli Kusch's fast-paced drums and Mikko Harkin's almost Baroque keyboard attack. While musically invigorating, however, `Fields of Avalon' belongs to singer Andre Matos (of Angra fame) who tests his vocal range to the very limit with a brave, impassioned and brilliant performance that will delight fans of his own band and of heavy power metal in general. It's all completely bonkers of course, with the band unable to resist massed vocals on the chorus and a hook line so brazenly catchy it could have been pulled from some Broadway-hugging musical. Yet what keeps you hooked is that all important sense of fun.

"In Paradisium" is the brand new, debut album by melodic/power metal supergroup "Symfonia". "Symfonia"s line up features striclty musicians who have served the international elite of melodic/power metal bands. Specifically the group features "Stratovarius" former leader, guitar hero Timmo Tolkki and bassist Jari Kainulainen, former "Angra" singer Andre Matos, drummer extraordinaire Uli Kusch (ex-"Helloween", ex-"Gamma Ray")and keyboardist Mikko Härkin (ex-"Sonata Arctica").

"In Paradisium" is a surprisingly bright sounding album, delivering positive attitude through its colorful-you could call them fantasy oriented-themes. So the "Symfonia" debut clearly does not go down the darker heavy metal path as the latest "Stratovarius", "Helloween" and "Revolution Renaissance" albums did. Still, the material is as heavy, fast and intense as any fan of the genre would demand from these renowned musicians. The riffs are heavy and continuous, the rhythm section up tempo (with Uli's trademark improvisations and fills) while Andre's soft yet powerful harmonic vocals grant the album its melodic nature.

Above all, one has to give credit to the band for keeping the songwriting as simple and direct as possible; almost every song opens on a classic riff, followed by catchy instrumental and vocal melodies, concluding to a large and satisfactory chorus. On a personal level, I was particularly surprised by Tolki's performance, clearly rejuvenated he comes up with classic sounding riffs and powerful melodies that reference the catchier side of 80s power metal. Favorite tracks include "Fields of Avalon", "Come by the hills","Rhapsody in black" and "Pilgrim Road".

If you're a fan of the old school European progressive power metal sound, the debut of the new supergroup Symfonia was a pretty big deal. Symfonia featured a trio of the biggest names in the genre - guitarist Timo Tolkki (ex-Stratovarius, ex-Revolution Renaissance), vocalist Andre Matos (ex-Angra, ex-Shaman) and Uli Kusch (ex-Helloween, ex-Masterplan) - plus bassist Jari Kainulainen (ex-Stratovarius, ex-Evergrey) and keyboardist Mikko Harkin (ex-Sonata Arctica). With this kind of pedigree, you really have to pay attention to this band.

Given Tolkki's post-Stratovarius work in Revolution Renaissance and the fact that he did most of the songwriting for this album, it's not really surprising (though it is perhaps a bit disappointing) that In Paradisum sounds exactly like the albums he wrote for Stratovarius (think Visions and Infinite). This is great if you love the Stratovarius formula and want to hear Tolkki's signature melodies and intricate solos, keyboards clearly modeled on Jens Johansson's style, and that icy cold Finnish production. It just feels like these songs were written with Tolkki's old bandmates in mind, and don't fully capitalize on Andre Matos and Uli Kusch's formidable talents. Speaking of Matos, the vocalist does an impressive job here, and it's always good to hear his unique voice in a progressive power metal setting. Tolkki's production job doesn't do him the same justice that Sascha Paeth would.

Familiar as it is, In Paradisum is still a strong album with some memorable songs.
