5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Love Story July 25, 2007
By Stephen
"In Passing" is a beautiful film for both women and men. A lovely and somewhat sad love story set in New York City.

Although it tells the story of two women who fall in and out of love, the plot is universal and will resonate with anyone who has been in a relationship.

The film style is both reflective and daring, with fully-shown sex scenes between the two main women characters.

In addition, the movie features a lot of great music. I hope they release the soundtrack as a CD!

2.0 out of 5 stars realistic story, but unentertaining delivery October 21, 2007
This story might have been fleshed out better on stage in a play or a documentary. The story was realistic enough and the acting was decent but as a movie,it wasn't entertaining. The story telling wasn't good. i disliked the soundtrack, and the way the screen would pan to become a photo/or a still. It seemed reminiscent of a home movie or the backdrop of an cheesy KaraOK video. But i understand that this was the film maker's first attempt and i guess everyone has to start somewhere. 4 Stars for effort. For entertainment value or the film's ability to grab me viscerally, 2 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful and eloquent November 20, 2012
This is certainly one of the more refreshing and interesting indie films in recent years. Where others lack subtlety and pace, In Passing maintains a crafty balance, offering an important story told with taste and eloquence. The production values are very high, but it's the narrative and three dimensional characters that make this film stand out. I'd like to see more indie flicks like this - I don't remember the last time I enjoyed one so much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting January 21, 2014
Verified Purchase
Not my favorite. I think it is too real. . .that's why it isn't a favorite of mine. Just too much like real life and most of us have been there in some way or other. Don't really want to relive those particular moments of my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Art Movie November 20, 2012
In Passing is one of my favorite films, why? Well not because it has Hollywood production value, (it hasn't), not because of it's famous actors (it has none), and not because of its MTV soundtrack (independent musicians only). I mention this up front because the movie, a first for New Yorker Kate Fitzgerald, has previously been trashed by people who'd rather watch Nip & Tuck. Their beefs are the usual fare (see above: production, actors, music) and some even offer unsolicited and ignorant film advice to the director herself. My advice to them is: go out and make a better film then!

If you want high budget lack lustre soft porn droll gay content there's plenty out there, and avoid this film. If you like serious indie art movies, In Passing, is your movie. And you don't have to be gay to get it's universal message of love and redemption. That's the point, it transcends labels and sexual identities.

In Passing is slow in places, and the dialogue reads at times like poetry. And yes, it is singular in its plot, but that generously allows the two main characters time to unfold. The movie was filmed entirely in NYC and on a limited budget. It has a resonance and integrity hard to come by today. It's also a classic, originally written and filmed around the same time as 911. It's not a movie to dump on but savor.
