Most Helpful Customer Reviews

Format: Audio CD
This is a great 2 CD set by some of my favorite musicians, Ellis on guitar, Brown on bass, Edison on trumpet,Plas Johnson on tenor sax; Jake Hanna & Mikle Melvoin on piano. The great George Duke subs for Melvoin on Disc 2.

I don't think there is one tune on both discs that I don't know. BTW after my first guitar teacher teacher died, I studied under Herb Ellis.

I think my favorite tune is one that Ellis wrote called "Mitch's Lament." Boy, do these guys swing. Tunes like "Detour Ahead," & "Flintstones 2"
as well. "Flintstones" is taken at a breakneck tempo.

The interplay between these guys (point-counterpoint) is something to behold. Harry "sweets" Edison takes a great solo on home grown, matched by Plas Johnson on tenor on the tune "Home Grown."

Look, get this set. You'll be glad you did.

If you are a jazz lover/bass player you have to have this album. Ray brown is at his best and the melodies are very catchy. Pick this one up great price for a double record.
