"...a testament to the possibility that by remembering Ram (God), one's life could be transformed, totally transformed...." -- Ram Dass (Richard Alpert)

"One of the most remarkable testimonies in the annals of world mysticism." -- Eknath Easwaran

About the Author

Swami Ramdas was born Vittal Rao, in Kerala, India in 1884. Before his renunciation, he was a householder whose domestic life suffered from bouts of unemployment. For relief from his outer circumstances, he began to chant a holy "Ram" (a name of God) mantra, which brought him great peace and joy. Afterwards, his detachment from the worldly life was quick; he began his pilgrimage and attained the vision of God. His later years were devoted to service and touring the world sharing a message of universal love and service

Format: Paperback
In Quest of God is the compelling tale of Swami Ramdas, a monk on an extraordinary spiritual journey throughout India. This book tells the remarkable story of how a penniless monk gave up all worldly possessions and placed complete faith in God. Readers of all walks of life will admire Ramdas' complete surrender to God and his lighthearted look at the world.
Traveling throughout India armed with nothing, Ramdas accepted no money but instead chose to live free from the restrictions money places on us. His magnificent tale includes a trek up the snow-covered Himalayas and trips to some of India's most awe-inspiring temples. This book not only provides a fascinating story of a man on a journey, but also gives detailed descriptions of some of India's most treasured places.
Told with a sparkling sense of humor, In Quest of God will make you laugh while showing you that life truly is how you look at it. By placing all his trust in God, Swami Ramdas shows us that life can be a series of surprises and joys where around every corner God gives you something to smile at.

Swami Ramdas, beloved Papa, who founded the Ananadashram at Kanhangad near Mangalore, South India, wandered penniless with surrender to his Ishta or beloved Diety Lord Ram and experienced the authentic spiritual flavour of India throughout that land. This book tells many tales to increase our faith and also explain the spiritual moorings of India...Much of the old world and practices may have been lost in modern India but refreshing to read how India was and is in many respects...A perfect introduction to the life of chanting Ram and prayer for spiritually minded---For both Hindus and Non-Hindus in the spirtual path , for the inward journey...

I love this book. Ramdas is a beautiful soul. This autobiography is a unique of its kind. Very rarely do we get to see the inner life of an ecstatic, devotee of God. Ramdas is a lover of God and to see the world from his point of view is rare and lovely. It is filled with innocence, love and gentleness. I cherish this book deeply.

This story is written about Ramdas's early life as a wondering monk and before he established his ashram. It shows how people slowly started to gather around him as his disciples. He didn't see them as disciples. Instead, he saw them as his dear friends. His humility is innocent and free. He is a joyful childlike servant of Ram and he saw everyone as beloved friends and extensions of his beloved Ram. He didn't place himself in a higher position because he didn't see the separation that would demand. He lived and saw the underlying unity of all of us as children of God. This is a sweet, real, and honest memoir of a lover of God and a lover of humanity. Well worth the read.

This is the eastern version of books like "Practicing the Presence of God." Ramdas is entertaining, totally humble and gave his whole life and will over to God's will in the form of Ram. It's the way to Self Realization.
