Book Description

October 1, 2010
The author of the groundbreaking Sacred Journeys returns with a new book that invites us to cross into a sacred space with women from around the world and across the centuries. Jan Richardson, a gifted author, poet, and artist, believes it is essential for women to listen to one another and to bring the fullness of their lives, with all their wonders and messiness, into their life of prayer. This book, Richardson writes, is an invitation to enter into a conversation. Here amongst these pages, in the presence of women past and present, is a place to enter into the mysteries that lie at the heart of who we are. Drawing from the often hidden wellsprings of women s wisdom in Jewish and Christian traditions, In the Sanctuary of Women gathers together six women from scripture and history whose lives invite us to move more deeply into our own: Eve, St. Brigid of Kildare, the Desert Mothers, Hildegard of Bingen, Harriet Powers, and the woman of the Song of Songs. Each chapter becomes its own sanctuary, gracing and engaging the reader with the reflections, stories, poetry, prayers, and blessings that Richardson offers. An invitation into reflection and prayer alone or in the company of others, In the Sanctuary of Women is a book to treasure and to share with the women and the men in your life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"If a book can indeed shelter the soul awhile and hold it close in beauty and peace, nurture and devotion, then this book most certainly does. It is, just as its title says, a sanctuary, a wayside station of prayer, and a site of worship for those blessed enough to enter here." --Phyllis Tickle, Compiler, The Words of Jesus A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord

"This refreshing resource widens the mind, deepens the heart, and strengthens the soul of spirituality. Richardson skillfully takes us to the edge and then brings us back to the core of spirituality. This book contains marvelous treasure."
--Joyce Rupp, Author of numerous best-selling books, including Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self

"To enter the Sanctuary of Women with Jan Richardson is to risk deep transformation, proof that this book is a God-gift. It journeys into the daunting spiritual landscapes traversed by those brave enough to wrestle with God's heart at close quarters. These womanly wisdoms are richly varied in their topography, but in each whether scripture's surprising Eve or Celtic Brigid or a Desert Mother or an emancipating Sojourner Truth or Jan herself is a wellspring of reflection and prayer dug very deep." --Peter Storey, Former bishop, Methodist Church of Southern Africa

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is my daily companion November 3, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
While Jan Richardson is one of my favorite authors, I read a number of spiritual books by different authors. I have been searching for a book that I can say is my daily companion, one to accompany me on life's journey in an honest and intimate way. I have found my companion in Jan's newest book and can enthusiastically recommend In the Sanctuary of Women for those seeking comfort and wisdom through the lens of a genuine and loving gaze at life as it really is. This book for me has been an invitation to self-acceptance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richardson's Best Yet November 21, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been a fan of Jan Richardson's work for several years, and I can say that this is her finest work yet. I haven's read it all, but I'm having trouble putting it down. Since it's a collection of daily devotions, I don't want to exhaust it just yet, but the first two sections (months?) are riveting. I don't usually like soul-searching, but this book insists on it. As a woman in ministry, I need this helpful and loving push to delve deep, and Jan gives just that to me. Thanks for a wonderful companion and mentor in In the Sanctuary of Women.

5.0 out of 5 stars a sanctuary in itself... January 15, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the best books for reflection, introspection and contemplation that I have come across in years. Richardson's wisdom is shared in an inspirational and empowering way, and covers extensive research on centuries of women who have much to tell is in the here and now.
It was given to me as a birthday gift, and has blessed me daily as I contemplate its message (it is suggested that it be used as daily devotional, but I can never read just one entry!).
I ordered a dozen copies of this book to give as Christmas gifts and I plan to order more.
