IN SEARCH of the REAL SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

“This Christmas, I’ll start shopping earlier.”
“This Christmas, we’ll visit all the relatives.”
“This Christmas, I’ll find that missing box of decorations.”
“This year, I’ll bake the cookies from scratch.”
“This year, we’re going to do Christmas right.”

If these promises sound familiar, In Search of the Real Spirit of Christmas is for you.

Christmas seasons come and go, often leaving us with vague pangs of regret. Why does the Christmas spirit seem so elusive? What is the real Christmas spirit anyway? Even those who know the Reason for the season can find themselves wondering if they’ve missed something.

Dan Schaeffer understands that familiarity can rob us of the glory of Christmas. We become immune to the Story’s real power. But Schaeffer also has some help for us. He even has advice for what to do when it doesn’t feel like Christmas.

In Search of the Real Spirit of Christmas takes you beyond the trappings and trimmings and into the wonder of the best gift of the season—the essence of Christmas.

I've read lots of Christmas books over the years, doing exactly what the title says.
Wynne Gillis
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with the true meaning of Christmas, and where to find the spirit amidst the crazy, busyness of the holidays.
Teresa Lasher
I've bought 12 copies and am giving them to my family, friends and two of my brothers who are too stubborn to surrender to God's mighty love.

Be prepared to have your heart changed, your spirit renewed and your understanding of God's love for you cemented into all of who you are in Him. Not a warm and fuzzy, feel-good sappy book, this is the best book I've read since "Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. That book changed me and Daniel Schaeffer's book changed me to an even deeper level. You and I know that it takes a Spirit anointed book to change our worldly, hardened hearts. Well, this book melted a lot of the barriers I've put up in my warped thinking about why God really couldn't love me.

Most of all, Schaeffer's book helped me understand that my innate, human inability to understand the depths of God's love often blocked the peace, joy and love that God eagerly wants to shower on each of us. Jesus' birth and His "suicide mission" to earth shows us, in such a full way, the heart and mind of Christ. If you've ever wanted to see Christmas from God's loving viewpoint, this is a MUST read book. Don't put off getting your own copy -- Christmas will never be the same for you.

I've bought 12 copies and am giving them to my family, friends and two of my brothers who are too stubborn to surrender to God's mighty love. I have full faith that this is the book about Jesus' love that will finally open their eyes to the awesome love of God in a way that no sermon has been able to break through for them.

I loved the Reflection & Celebration discussions at the end of each of the short 15 chapters. They helped internalize the chapter's true meaning. I've talked to my pastor and will most likely use this book in a small group teaching setting next fall.

You'll probably adopt the "12 Days of Chistmas" sneaky project for the whole family to share with another person or family.

I'm excited about a book I'm reading, In Search of the Real Spirit of Christmas, by Dan Schaeffer.

Back cover reads: "Christmas seasons come and go, often leaving us with vague pangs of regret. Why does the Christmas spirit seem so elusive? ...Even those who know the Reason for the season can find themselves wondering if they've missed something."

Yes, that was me. Shop, bake, plan, go here, go there...where is the true Christmas? I knew it wasn't in doing all the traditional holiday things or buying the hot item for the year, but how could I find this true Christmas? After hearing the Christmas story many times, I became "immune to the story's real power."

In this book, the reader sees Christ through the eyes of those whose lives were touched by Jesus--Mary and Joseph, shepherds, angels, magi, etc. Some chapters compare modern day Christmas stories and traditions with the true and accurate story of the birth of Immanuel.

Many struggle with loneliness especially at this time of year when everyone else seems to be joyful and have it all together. Some have lost loved ones, and they will no longer be joining them at the festive table. This time of year tends to accentuate those sensitive feelings. "Celebrate Immanuel--God with you...take this special time to invite Him again into your presence. Thank Him that you are never alone, even when you feel alone." Just the mere reading of those words brought comfort to my heart. God's word speaks peace to the searching heart and soul.

*"God humbled himself in a way that even a common shepherd would understand, or a child, or a tax-gatherer, or a fisherman, or a fallen woman, or a self-righteous Pharisee, or me. While lying in a manger, God was making an announcement to all who would come to Him.

Dan Schaeffer is co-pastor of Shoreline Community Church. He said in the Introduction to this 2003 book, "The problem is that when something becomes too familiar to us, we have trouble seeing it in a new way. That is the purpose of this book: to help you see beyond the familiar and find the true spirit of Christmas---the spirit that is meant to decorate our hearts the way lights decorate a barren tree. So join me now in the quest for the real Christmas spirit." (Pg. 10)

He asks, "how would a group of shepherds find one child---the child they were seeking? There would have been mothers and babies galore. Which one was the right one? All the babes were wrapped in some kind of cloths, so that didn't narrow it down. No, the signs for the shepherds was that the baby would be lying in a manger. Even in that ancient time and place, a stable for a birthing room and a manger for a crib would have been unusual. This scene was strange, and it was intended to be." (Pg. 23-24)

He observes, "Were the shepherds chosen to receive the angelic announcement because they were men of honorable character and spiritual depth? No, we've already learned the kind of reputation most shepherds had. What of Mary and Joseph? Were they chosen to be the human parents of Jesus because of their great achievements and the opportunities they could offer Him? ... They did not earn the right to become the parents of Christ by virtue of their character or accomplishments; they too were receivers... The obvious spirit of that first Christmas was one of being blessed, of having received mercy and grace from God." (Pg. 96-97)

He suggests, "In this phrase [`Everlasting Father' in Isa 9:6], Isaiah is not confusing Jesus the Son with God the Father.
