Four Year Strong used to be one of my favorite bands. Well, they still are... so long as I only listen to the albums before this one. I'm not here to whine, "Oh, no more breakdowns, therefore it sucks". FYS have made the jump to "generic radio rock", meaning that instead of putting them on a playlist with ADTR, Set Your Goals, and The Wonder Years, now they fit more along the lines of Breaking Benjamin and Theory of a Deadman - which is far from a good thing. It's a shame... this band has so much talent and can really write a great song.

Edit 5/5/2012: So after a few of the songs popping up on Pandora, I gave the album another couple listens and have found a few songs that I do have to admit I like. "Unbreakable" and "Heaven Wasn't Built to Hold Me" are good songs through and through; "Just Drive" has a very cool riff (but lacking chorus); and despite the intentional irony, "Fairweather Fan" is a cool song reminiscent of the style on "Enemy Of The World". New rating: 2.5 out of 5.

This album is generic, bland, cookie-butter--all the adjectives that I would've never imagined using for this band before this album came out. A lot of bands have mis-steps, and this is a big steaming pile of mis-step, especially compared to their previous work. Do yourself a favor and check out the two albums prior to this one. Much more creative, much more enjoyable.

The reasons I fell in love with these guys in the first place back on Rise were the crazy bass drums and the hint of metal in the guitars, which was followed up beautifully and even improved upon with Enemy. But sadly, both of those things are all but gone with In Some Way. Every once in a while you can hear a hint of the same intensity in the vocals for a brief second, or the guitars will approach the insane speed and unique sound, but it never really happens. I'm not giving up on this album yet, but for the most part, this is just a somewhat-solid vanilla pop-punk/alt-rock album. I'll be patient, but please bring it all back next time FYS.

UPDATE 12/12/2011:
Like I stated above, I didn't give up on this album right away, and actually ended up liking it, and bumping my rating up from a 3 to a 4. Just keep in mind that this isn't the same FYS, don't have any expectations, and you'll probably have a lot of fun.

This album was very disapointing. It just basically sounds like alternative rock now. The album is good if your into that type of sound. I used to enjoy there fun and upbeat sound with great breakdowns, but sadly no more crazy breakdowns. If you liked this band for there slightly pop punk with a touch of hardcaore sound you will be disapointed. They changed for the worse and it's to bad. Just have to wait and hope the next album sounds better.

And finally, like so many bands before them, Four Year Strong seems to be going through some monumental changes.
Honestly, just listen to the sample tracks; the songs aren't up beat and fun in this album, hell, they don't even have clever titles. They have alternative/rock style titles - boring.

Of course, bands change their sound as they get older. We've seen this in ADTR, BMTH, and many other bands around or in the genre. I'm assuming it's the loss of their keys player which changed the sound so dramatically, because keyboard is what made this band's music so uplifting.

Hopefully they get a new Keyboardist (with a beard) and find their sound again, but as of right now I can't consider them "Happy Hardcore".

Lots of people don't enjoy this album because FYS have evolved. They decided they no longer wants synths, so Josh is out of the band and they are more of an actual rock band now with anthemic rock songs. I think this is easily their best album yet, and I couldn't stop listening to it when I bought it when it first came out. Just don't think of it as Four Year Strong. If they had a different name, I'm sure you all would love this album.

I do not agree with all the other reviews. Yeah, four year strong changed their sound, but you have to realize something. They were trying to appeal to a larger audience. It is unfair for this album to have a 3 star rating because it's a little different than the others.
