Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Stevie Wonder moved to Detroit at an early age and has become one of that city's most famous sons. Blind from birth, Stevie has never allowed that to be an obstacle or handicap. His normal childhood activities of playing games and climbing trees with his friends were suddenly set on a different path when his amazing musical talents were spotted by Bonnie White ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Circle February 14, 2001
Format:Audio CD
In Square Circle is another classic Stevie Wonder album. The album features his usual themes; ballads, upbeat r&b and songs with a social bent. The socially conscious songs are all strong including "Land Of La-La", "Spiritual Walkers" and "It's Wrong (Apartheid)". "Part Time Lover" is a shimmering workout number that is as good as anything he's ever done. The song became his ninth and final number one song (although he would hit number one in 1986 as part of Dionne Warwick's "That's What Friends Are For" song). "Go Home" is an underrated gem with it's driving keyboards and funky beat. "Overjoyed" is a lush beautiful ballad that just soars to the heavens. In Square Circle hit number four on the charts but it marked the end of a 14 year run of chart dominance for Mr. Wonder. To date, he has not reached the top ten on either the singles or albums chart since this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this album too much, maybe three much September 4, 2003
Format:Audio CD
As a kid who became a big fan of Stevie Wonder after hearing That Girl in the late 70s, I had been telling my friends for years just how cool Stevie Wonder was. In 1985, Stevie made my argument for me with In Square Circle, certainly his best album of the last 20 years. The single Part-Time Lover was a huge, huge hit, and the song has such great beat and rhythm that it always sounds fresh and exciting. Go Home also saw success as a single, but it's probably my least favorite song on the album. Then there was Overjoyed; I'm not sure it ever got the attention it deserved as a single. Quite simply, it is one of the most beautiful songs of Stevie Wonder's incredible career. The rest of the album is a smorgasbord of musical delight. I Love You Too Much is a powerful, energetic love song, while Spiritual Walkers and Land of La La are hard-driving songs with infectious beats. If it's slow Stevie Wonder ballads that you want, look no farther than the tender Whereabouts and precious Never in Your Sun. Stranger on the Shore of Love represents the best of both sides of Stevie Wonder, and I think it could have been a huge hit had it been released as a single. The album closes with both a political and moral track called It's Wrong (Apartheid), a song protesting the system of apartheid that still existed in South Africa at the time this album was released.
In Square Circle was actually the very first CD I ever owned, and it still stands as a showcase of what CD technology could do. Overjoyed features the calming sounds of ocean waves in the background, giving the song a very distinctive sound; I Love You Too Much has a unique brush-like percussion beat driving it, and it comes through loud and clear on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars There was nothing Square About this return to Form December 23, 2012
By L. Boki
Format:Audio CD
Being a Stevie Wonder audiophile for his entire career, including, of course, his golden era, "In Square Circle" was indeed a classic in the making every bit as deserving of inclusion in his peak years. i had listened intently since "Where I'm Coming From" and willingly followed where he led. Though the length between "Fullfillingness First Finale" and "Songs in the Key of Life" of over 2 years was unique for its time, "In Square Circle" came after a long 5 year drought. But it's launch was tremendous with the #1 duet w/Luther Vandross, "Part Time Lover". Motown had to feel a sense of relief. But beyond that smash pop/soul hit were new classics like "Overjoyed", "Never in Your Sun", "Stranger on the Shore" and a personal favorite, "Go Home". A song like "Spiritual Walkers" impacted me like "Talk with God". If the apartheid era "It's Wrong" kind of misses the boat, it was still very is Stevie after all. Those classic love songs like "Stranger on a Shore" was indicative of what makes me such a Stevie fan. The wonderfully exhaustive 9 plus minutes of the "Go Home" (Extended Mix) is possibly my most played song from this collection. I suspect that "In Square Circle" falls short for some "know-it-all" critics, but, as a fan, Stevie didn't misstep until the next album, "Characters". Being Stevie though, it certainly doesn't mean that "Characters" was unlistenable, it was just not as euphoric, relatable or important as its predecessors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stevie on Autopilot August 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Wonder's second official studio album of the 80s (not counting THE WOMAN IN RED soundtrack side project)is like an old Holiday-Inn ad--The best surprise is no surprise. There are the usual radio-friendly uptempo treats ("Part-Time Lover" and "Go Home"), ultra-romantic ballads ("Overjoyed," "Whereabouts"), message songs ("Spiritual Walkers", "It's Wrong (Apartheid)"), a good old-fashioned funk throwdown ("I Love You Too Much"), and even a west-coast version of "Livin' For The City" (the bouncy but sad "Land of La La"). The synthesizers this time have more of a digital sheen, while the drum machine programming provides a perfect landscape for 80s radio playlists without resorting to that loud, cheesy electro-snare sound. Seems like the only thing that's missing from this 80s album is the required blazing guitar solo that seemed to dominate uptempo music from this period.

Although this Grammy-winning album isn't SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, IN SQUARE CIRCLE is a pleasure because it shows a master at work who skillfully changes with the times while still being true to himself.
