I like it. Great Stones and Replacements covers. Can't go wrong with a salute to Junior Kimbrough either.

New Album Far Behind ?,

I don't know when the North Mississippi Allstars will bereleasing their next album, but this EP will certainly whet the appetite of fans in the meantime! Any fans of Southern/Country rock should enjoy this. 3 covers and 3 original tunes. My favorite cut is the cover of the Stones' Stray Cat Blues.

What in the Right On Is Going On?,

First off, I really like NMAS. I've seen them a few times, and enthusiastically recommend their first two LP's. That being said, I would suggest one runs far and fast from this less-than marginal collection.
The bright spot is "Meet Me In The City." A good cut, which on its own would get 3.5 stars. The other tunes collectively drag this EP down to the one (maybe half) star. First off, "Stray Cat Blues"... why? Who needs a Stones cover? Second, "The Weight" is quite possibly the worst version I've heard, including one of me drunk singing it at a friend's house. I almost thought they were having some sport with the audience. "Goin' Home" is alright, but gets a bit too jam bandy for my tastes. (Doc Watsonesque, good; Led Zeppelinesque, not so good.) Finally, "Eyes" is mired in more bad singing from what I regard as usually good singers and "Skyway" immediately elicited a moving hand gesture that... well, say no more. Over all, a very bad disc from a very good band. I'm still a little confused about it as an All Stars fan. (If you want to check them out for the first time, get "Shake Hands With Shorty"... it is the best of the lot. I am eagerly awaiting Duwayne Burnside's solo albums, though. |
