Book Description

Previously published as Carpetbagger’s Wife.

“… emotional richness and depth readers will savor.” John Charles, Booklist

“…yet another masterpiece penned by the historical mistress of romance. Don't miss this truly touching and tender story." - The Old Book Barn Gazette

Wed to the Enemy! The War left Caddie Marsh a widow with only a rundown plantation, her children and Southern pride to sustain her. She would do anything to salvage Sabbath Hollow for the sake of her son and daughter, even wed one of the Yankees against whom she’s so bitter. The fact that Manning Forbes bears a disturbing resemblance to her late husband only makes matters worse. It would be easier if her new husband's integrity and kindness didn't stir up feelings he claims not to want from her…

Sworn to Protect… Manning Forbes has his own reasons for wanting to protect and provide for the Marsh family. Reasons he is desperate to keep from Caddie. If his beautiful, inquisitive bride discovers his true identity, Manning fears he would lose the family who has captured his heavily-guarded heart!

Review

From Booklist
Hale expertly evokes both the despair and hope that drove the lives of those who survived the Civil War, and her realistically flawed hero and heroine's struggles with their own guilt give this historical romance an emotional richness and depth readers will savor. John Charles

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Meaty Historical June 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been a fan of Deborah Hale since her very first book over a decade ago, and this remains one of my favorites. It was originally published under the title THE CARPETBAGGER'S WIFE and is set around the American Civil War. I am so happy to see that it has been reissued at last, finally available as an ebook. I am re-reading it now, and it is just as wonderful as it was the first time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ohhhhhhhh July 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read a lot maybe 6 books a week and this is one of the best books I have ever read and for me that's saying something because I have read some of the best authors in historical romance and western historical, which are the two categories I still indulge in. I just love the hero in this book, he is like every woman's dream man. Such a loving caring man, wow. I will read this author again for sure. There are some authors who are so talented they are like to writing what Josh Groban is to singing lol. Deborah Hale is such an author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended! June 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
That might just be the my favorite historical cover this year. What's inside was pretty terrific too! Caddie Marsh and Manning Forbes' Civil War romance was wonderful. Highly recommended! And if you're new to Deborah Hale, you'll be thrilled to see her extensive backlist. Her stories offer a depth and emotional resonance that will keep you coming back for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really loved the story September 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved the connection between Caddie and Manning. They were good for one another an could help to provide healing for each other. There was a nice bit of longing and tension and the sex scenes were nicely done. Beautiful story and well written. I will read more by this author.
