For many quilters, the quilting is secondary to the piecing of the quilt top. In her second book, Walters makes a strong argument for the importance of quilting to make beautiful patchwork shine. The focus of this book is quilting negative space—the large expanses of solid fabric often used in modern quilting. With a selection of projects as well as samples from her other work, Walters demonstrates a variety of techniques for quilting negative space to enhance the design of quilt tops. VERDICT Like her first book, the style is friendly and pleasant, and Walters’s gentle guidance will help increase quilters’ confidence in their machine-quilting abilities. --Library Journal; 11/15/12

I am always looks for new or more information about machine quilting…new techniques, more designs…anything to improve my quilting. A while back I had reviewed a book Free Motion Quilting with Angela Walters. I loved the book and have even tried a few of the designs. Then I saw that C&T Publishing had another book written by Angela so I had to check “In the Studio with Angela Walters” out too. My dream would be able to machine quilt like she does. Her work is just amazing. I can see myself trying a few or her machine quilting techniques. I have to say, I LOVE the machine quilting. It’s just gorgeous! --Jo's Country Junction; 11/25/13

I absolutely love Angela Walter's first book, and I recommend it to every quilter I know. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed in this book. I was hoping for more free motion quilting ideas and tips - perhaps a more advanced version of the second book? This book includes patterns for creating quilt tops and tips for quilting them. I don't typically follow a pattern, although I do appreciate the inspiration I get from them. And while I like the quilting tips, all of the quilting designs used in this book are the designs that were introduced in the first book. There are many quilters out there who will love and benefit from this book, and I will still recommend it to those who I feel will enjoy it. Perhaps I was just not the target audience for this book.
Angela's book is the best book on quilting I have ever read, and I own a lot of books. The chapters each have a focus such as "Quilting Fills in the Details", Quilting Provides Contrast" and "Quilting Supplies Texture". Each chapter begins with a definition of its topic. "Texture...the way a quilt actually feels...or how it visually "feels" when you look at it." She continues with tips for great texture and discussion of what texture looks like. Finally there is a project to use the ideas you have learned. Her descriptions are brief and thorough.
Another thing that makes this book really special are the drawings from Angela's sketchbook, that let you understand her design process. The drawings are lovely, and make the book worth owning. The quilt examples in the book are modern quilting at its finest.
This is the only book you will ever need to learn to use machine quilting to take your quilt from nice to amazing!
I love Angela Walters. I loved the first book. This is more conceptual and great for newer free motion quilters. With so many years experience, I don't really need the concepts. The projects are neat if you are looking to enter the modern quilt arena. As always, her explanations are clear, well diagrammed and an enjoyable "chat" with a talented quilter.
This book is mostly a book of "modern" quilt patterns with ideas on how to quilt her designs. I was looking for a book to teach me free-motion quilting, and this is not it. If I had looked through it first I wouldn't have purchased it.
This book is perfect for the modern quilting that the designs are simple and straight forward. The pics are clear and the narratives are easy to follow. The designs are doable, even for the novice. I use the book as a reference tool each time I'm designing the quilting portion of the overall process. I like quilting that complements the quilt top design rather than becoming the dominant feature. I highly recommend this book and look forward to Angela's next work.
