Biography

It’s been two years since the release of Jesse McCartney’s Departure, an album that showcased an edgier pop/R&B sound, reflecting his growth as a singer and songwriter. The album’s first hit single, “Leavin',” (produced by Tricky and The Dream) was a blockbuster smash, becoming the #1 most played Top 40 single of the year. The song spent 6 weeks at #1 on ... One of the best albums I've heard in 2014.
Jamie Lassiter
His previous material wasn't my thing, but this album has won me over and it makes me want to hear where he'll take it with the next album.
jazzomattic
I love how simplistic his songs are while still being vocally complex, and I just adore the sound of his voice.

It's amazing to me that this album has not received more buzz, given the amazing songs and producing that is seen on this album. This is the first Jesse McCartney album I have owned, having discovered (or rediscovered, if you will) him last year during his summer concert tour with BSB. He was one of those "also sang" performers of the boy band era a decade or so ago, and while I had heard of him, he wasn't anyone I would certainly say was "amazing". With "In Technicolor", this has changed.

Like Justin Timberlake, Jesse has grown up. No longer singing catchy pop beats about "Beautiful Souls," his lyrics are quick, transitions are smooth, and his vocals are just as good, if not better, than 10 years ago. There's a very retro feel to this album, and in my opinion not a wasted track to be heard. What is disheartening is the lack of publicity being given to Jesse as he tries to get back into the music industry again. This has some wonderful summer hits to it, but unless you're listening to satellite radio you're unlikely to hear any radio station play his album.

The only thing I would change about this release would be my wish that the Bonus Tracks released exclusively through Target would have been available on all albums. They're both great numbers, and it's a shame they may be glossed over by the majority who will never have the opportunity to hear them.

While it will inevitably draw comparison to Justin Timberlake, In Technicolor stands on its own in a surprising and fresh way. McCartney takes some great moves from the past to add a retro feel to this album's sound, and makes a tight, well-produced, fun listen. I've always been a casual fan of his music in a take-it-or-leave-it kind of way. Departure seemed like a step in a more assured direction, but the cancelled album (Have It All) didn't seem like it was doing much in the way of moving him forward. In many ways, it was Departure pt. 2: Landing. It wasn't bad, it just didn't innovate. In Technicolor, on the other hand, branches into a new realm. While it will not sound out of place with the rest of his catalog, it does add a higher level of energy to his work, which has sometimes been over-produced to the point of sounding mannered. In fact, the production of some of his past albums has occasionally overshadowed the fact that he's got some great singing skills, and the style of this CD allows that to take more of a front seat. He comes across as a far more self-assured vocalist on this album than he has on any disc up to this point. Light on ballads, the best tracks are the kinetic "Back Together," sweet and slightly cheeky "Young Love" (a song that could easily have been a misstep coming from someone who's 27, but he sells it), and "Superbad," which are front loaded in a heavy 1-2-3 knockout following the lead in track. But they aren't the only bright spots on an album that sounds consistent and of-a-piece in a way that McCartney's previous albums haven't always managed. Previous impressions aside, I've found this one on heavy rotation in my car and at home since I got it.

Who is this Jesse Mccartney? I never heard him sound so good before and I never been a fan of him. I love his new sound, he has a new electric soulful sound, highly impressed with this album. I normally do not rate albums a perfect five but all of the songs reminds me of Bruno Mars and his voice is so soothing, singing with those high falsetto notes.

My personal favorites are: Goodie bag, The Other Guy,All about Us, Tie the Knot, and the Get back together! I never thought that I would be a huge fan of him but this album made me reconsider all of his previous work.

This album is a huge hit for old and new fans ( including me), a tremendous album!

With this album, Jesse has stepped out of the "teen idol" phase and into being a true musical artist with potential to expand his audience. It's rare these days that albums are made to be cohesive entities (as most are a mash up of hopeful singles), but this album really works as an "album" and all the songs are actually really good.

The vibe is cool, classy, sexy, and sophisticated, all while still fitting into the umbrella of "pop". His audience so far has been mostly females, but I think this album could draw in a male audience and more sophisticated listening audience. His previous material wasn't my thing, but this album has won me over and it makes me want to hear where he'll take it with the next album.

This is a great move on Jesse's part. I just hope the media gives this the attention it deserves.

I became a Jesse McCartney fan when I saw him opening up for the Backstreet Boys in 2013. In Technicolor is the first album I have bought and listened to from Jesse since that time. I need to give his previous albums a listen soon though.
I bought the album from Target, which came with two bonus tracks. So Cool, In Technicolor Part 1 & 2, All About Us, and Checkmate are just a few of my favorite. This is an album I can listen to without skipping a song.
I won't go through track by track, but I will say if you're on the edge and debating if to purchase this album or not - buy it. I'm always skeptical about spending money on an artist I'm not 100% sure of. One of the best albums I've heard in 2014. This review is coming from a 30 year old male.
