I'm not a fan of Led Zeppelin, so when I finally break down and put a song on my ipod by the group, you know it must eiher be good or I am losing it. My wife has ALL of Zeppelin's music, and she is a big fan; I, on the other hand, have refused to put any music of the group in my collection (including the super hit Stairway from Heaven). This song has a good beat (although a bit long), and it is enjoyable (at least for me) to listen to on occasion.

This review is from: In The Evening (MP3 Download)
The opening song on what unfortunately turned out to be Zeppelin's last ever studio album is called "In The Evening" and was recorded in November of 1978 at ABBA's Polar Studios in Sweden. There are quite a few things to admire on it, but the aspect I like the most is the experimental drone intro where drummer Bonham hits some electronically treated percussion (similar to the outro in the eastern epic "Kashmir") while Jimmy Page brings back the violin bow trick playing some runs that utilize the not very often used Lydian scale.
After a minute, singer Plant sings the song's title and the main body of the song kicks in with a mean riff, a string synth texture played by bassist Jones, and the usual heavy drumming from Bonham. The verses are simple but the melody gets slightly expanded as the song moves along. The guitar solo is notable for including a percussive effect on it and some tremolo arm usage. However, an unexpected instrumental bridge is present, with the band slowing down to ballad tempo. Page plays some superb arpeggios and a melodic solo in this section while Jones' string synth provides a lot of atmosphere. After it's over, the song pretty much continues with the chorus riff until the fade out save for one last verse with the expnaded key change. A gem in the band's catalogue! Thanks for taking the time to read! Later...
