The sound quality of this set is extremely good with the exception of the first two tracks on the first CD.

It features Marion Hutton, Ray Erbele and Tex Beneke and for those who love the Glenn Miller 'sound' as I do this is a must.

Those who were living during the Swing Era, and those who didn't, but wish they had, will really enjoy the music.

Ten CD's containing over 200 songs between them may seem a lot to some, but to anybody who truly appreciates Glenn's music, it is a real treat. That said, this is a budget release so although there appears to be no problem with the sound quality, the packaging is limited. There are no liner notes, so the information is limited to the track listing, which is limited to song title, songwriter credit and running time for each song, without reference to recording dates or to which singers and musicians participate on the various tracks. Nevertheless, you'll find much music to enjoy here.

The track selection mainly focuses on Glenn's music from 1940 to 1942, largely ignoring 1939. Beginning with Speaking of heaven (which entered the Billboard chart in December 1939), all except three (Bluebirds in the moonlight, Starlit hour, Blue rain) of Glenn Miller's Billboard hits, however minor, are here. Of the earlier hits, only two (Moonlight serenade, In the mood) are here. I guess the compilers couldn't leave those two out, but other omissions include the number one hits Wishing will make it so, Stairway to the stars, Moon love, Over the rainbow, Man with the mandolin and Blue orchids. All those tracks, and the other big hits from 1939, are available elsewhere, but it's worth noting that they aren't here.

As with any in-depth collection of Glenn's music, there is plenty of variety within the overall Glenn Miller sound, with plenty of instrumentals as well as vocals by Ray Eberle, Tex Beneke and Marion Hutton.

Despite its budget price, I wouldn't recommend this as the starting point for a collection of Glenn's music. I recommend

This is one of the best CD box sets of Glenn Miller's music that you will ever find. There are 10 CD's in the set and the sound is excellent. I have this box set and have played some of them many times, and the sound is just like it was when I bought it. Songs include: It Was Written In The Stars, Hear My Song, Violetta, April Played The Fiddle, Polka Dots And Moonbeams, Moonlight Serenade, My,My!, In An Old Dutch Garden By An Old Dutch Mill, Danny Boy, Stepping Out With A Memory Tonight, and many more. Those who were living during the Swing Era, and those who didn't, but wish they had, will really enjoy the music. These are the original recordings, and there are almost 300 songs in all. Enjoy!!

I already own the Golden Years set which contains 98 tracks. However, this set contains over a hundred Glenn Miller tracks that I've not heard before.

The sound quality of this set is extremely good with the exception of the first two tracks on the first CD. These tracks exhibit noticeable light static. While these same tracks on the Golden Years set also have some static, it is slightly more apparent in this set.

This set contains about twice as many tracks as does the Golden Years set, even though the cost is about the same. That makes this set a real bargain at a cost of about $1.50 per CD or about seven and a half cents per track.

Here's some information to help you choose between the three major multi disc sets of Glenn Miller material. I combined the track listings of all three sets and sorted by track title. Below are listed those tracks that appear in either the Legends set or the Golden Years set that do not appear in this set. I've noted which of the other sets include the missing material.

"Legends" = 100 Hits Legends
"Golden" = Golden Years: 1938-42

A Handful Of Stars [Legends]
Ain't cha comin' out? [Golden, Legends]
And the angels sing [Golden]
Back To Back [Legends]
Blue evening [Golden]
Blue Moonlight [Golden]
Blue Orchids [Golden, Legends]
Bluebirds in the Moonlight [Golden]
But it didn't mean a thing [Golden]
Ding-dong!

This 10 CD box set is wonderful. The box itself as well as the sleeves in which the CDs are placed are made of good-quality hard cardboard with a glossy finish. Much more compact and easier to handle and store than the larger plastic CD covers. The sound is quite good and pleasant to listen to. The selection is vast and has quite a bit of vocals with the beautiful voices of Ray Eberle and Marion Hutton. 10 CDs is a lot of music and the best part is the price. You can't get a better deal than this box set. I am absolutley satisfied with my purchase and look forward to many hours of beautiful music from the good old days. I certainly recommend this box set.

What's not to love? Close to two hundred selections by one of the greatest bands ever. The ten CDs contain not only his most heard songs, but many that are rarely, if ever heard. There are live performances, studio recordings, performances from his radio show. The set contains songs by his civilian band as well as his Air Force Band. I own many Glenn Miller recordings on CD, tape and original 78s, but there are numbers here I'd never heard played by his band. I found it to be interesting that several of the songs in this set are different versions of the ones usually found on the bands recordings. One or two are quite different, both in tempo and in solos.

All in all, this is a great set for any Glenn Miller fan. The recording quality is very good, the price is great and the set will provide many hours of terrific music for listening or dancing. I highly recommend it.
