Format: Paperback
Most of us have seen enough cop shows or read enough murder mysteries to at least think that we know how the big city cops work. Joel Jurrens' "In the Sticks" gives the reader an introduction to a totally different side of law enforcement: the rural county sheriff's department. "In the Sticks" paints a spot-on picture of law enforcement, well, in the sticks. The characters are believable and well-drawn and the storyline kept me guessing right up until the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre, but who might be interested in reading a murder mystery written from a slightly different perspective.

Joel Jurrens has wriiten just the type of mystery novel I enjoy: flawed characters, not too much gore, easy to read. Lyle Hoffman is one burned out cop but he still tries to get the job done - just not with the same enthusiasm he used to have. He's just putting in time. Until he ends up being first on the scene of a truly grisly murder and circumstances conspire against him to get his head back into the game.

Mr Jurrens has drawn on his experience in small town law enforcement in writing this book, and it shows. The crime, the police officers, even the bad guys feel completely real - not the least bit contrived. The flow of the investigation continues at just the right pace to keep the reader interested and guessing. The sarcastic humor was also a huge plus for me. I love it when characters don't take themselves too seriously. All in all, In the Sticks is great pick for those of us who like mystery novels with a little edge and without the nightmares.

This is a well written, well thought out murder/crime mystery. The author's style is easy, like listening to an old friend tell a story. A very good story it is too. Lyle is the main protagonist, a deputy in a small town who has lost his wife, the love of his life, to divorce. After that, his enthusiasm for the job just isn't there. He's putting in his time until he can retire. Then a murder occurs, and Lyle slowly moves back into the life he once loved. After all, he's a deputy sheriff, a good man as well as a good deputy. The author shows by his dealing with others, citizens, bosses and friends that he is a decent man who cares. Lyle's investigation continues and he finally figures it all out. He figures out everything. Took me by surprise and made me love the book all the more. In The Sticks is a book I highly recommend to anyone who wants to read a good story.

This author knows small towns - their politics, social atmosphere and policing and he's written a wonderfully absorbing novel set there. The protagonist draws you into his life and makes you care from the first page. He's a decent guy trying to do a good job even though his heart has been crushed and he no longer loves the job the way he once did. And then there are the twists this plot takes, right up to the very last page. Unlike Perry Mason where the perp suddenly jumps up and confesses in the last minutes of the program, Mr. Jurrens takes us with him as Lyle sorts through all the evidence and tries first this possibility, then that one, until the real answer becomes clear, but then throws a twist in you won't see coming. Don't miss this book.

Excellent first book for a very promising new writer. The suspense starts on the first page and continues throughout the 300+ pages. I had the 'guilty' party pegged two or three times, only to have Jurrens throw a curve at me and have me guessing. The only thing I was sure of was the murderer wasn't me--but there were a couple of times I had to do a double take in the mirror! Highly recommend this book and I look forward to more.

This is a well written book with a captivating storyline. Joel has done a great job of keeping the reader "wanting more." Being from a small town myself where law enforcement has to play by different rules, he enforces those "rules" and treats his "suspect" friends with respect. This 1st novel is well worth reading and the one I've suggested to many friends after the fifty shades trilogy.Looking forward to his next ...

All too often, crime novels are written by people who have no background in the area. That is certainly NOT the case with In The Sticks.

Joel Jurrens, former sheriff's deputy, lends an air of great realism to the genre. His 'shop talk' scenes in which law enforcement officers discuss their trade are very compelling. And his main character, Lyle, is absolutely convincing - we see a human side to him and understand that he's not invincible - neither as an investigator nor in matters of the heart.

If you like crime, detective, or mystery fiction, this is a must read. If you like regional fiction, this is a must read. If you like fiction at all, this is a must read.

Read it.
