If you are a college student, add this to your 'must read' list. Learn of those who have gone before you with such passion, commitment, and sacrifice. Learn about the greatest missions movement in the history of the church! what truths guided them, how they did it, the issues they faced and how you can be a part of fulfilling the Great Commission in YOUR generation. This will inspire you, provoke you, and challenge you to GO. May Jesus use this book to raise up a generation who again, will live for something greater than themselves, do something hard for God, and give all to see his glory cover the earth and every tongue tribe and nation stand at the throne. This first reason I believe you would be wise to read "In This Generation" by Todd Ahrend, is because of how practical and relevant it is for the Church today. Most church/missions history books fail to form a bridge between the ministry of our spiritual ancestors and the ministry of the church today. Some authors might attempt to throw out a "timeless truth" or two, or they might attempt to help the reader learn from the mistakes of a less enlightened generation, but few Church or Missions History books truly focus on learning from the past to impact ministry strategies today. In This Generation takes us back to one of the most exciting times in the history of the Christian church, but it doesn't leave us there. In every chapter, Todd shows us the strategies and principles behind what many consider to be one of the most successful missions mobilization efforts in the history of the Western church. Todd uses his years of experience in mobilization ministries to show us which strategies are relevant for today and why. I wish this book had been around 4 or 5 years ago, before my wife and I began a mobilization effort in Brazil.

Secondly, this book is all about the glory of our awesome God and making Him known among the least reached. Todd could have simply told a great story about a fascinating time in America, but the author's passion and drive is that all would have the opportunity to hear the name of Jesus in their own tongue. His passion for the lost comes through clearly and will fire the reader up to join God in what He's doing.

Lastly, you should read "In This Generation" because it's a fun and interesting read. It never gets bogged down with countless dates or chronology.

A good definition of a missionary is one who allows God to interrupt his or her life. "In This Generation" is a practical book on how to motivate this generation for missions. Todd Ahrend draws on the experiences of one of the greatest missions movements in history -- the Student Volunteer Movement of the late 1800's. He takes you into the minds and hearts of these master mobilizers, who had a passion to share the Gospel with the world. Missions mobilizers of this generation learn from the lessons of the Student Volunteer Movement, and Todd does a great job of weaving current Christian culture into the application for today. This book is for anyone who has a heart for evangelizing the world. To reach the world for Christ in THIS generation, Todd gives us a good look at those who almost accomplished it in their own generation.

I thoroughly enjoyed "In This Generation". Well done!!!

Man, as I read through this book it was obvious that Todd has researched and experienced a TON. His vast knowledge of the scriptures, history, and cultures are evident and he explains it in an excellent way. The applications of this book could drastically change college students and that nations for Christ. As you read this book, keep your mind and heart open to be teachable in all areas. Todd Ahrend reiterates an incredible vision and goal to make Jesus known around the whole world! He challenges all Christians, especially college students, to throw a bigger rock so the ripples will stretch to the nations and into eternity.

Todd Ahrend knows college students. He also loves them and wants them to give their lives to something that counts. He also knows history, missions, and the history of misions. Especially the role students have played in missions history. The combination of these is powerful. You will really really enjoy this read. Grab it and immerse yourself (and your students!) in this book. Steve Shadrach

Format: Paperback
Great book that delves into some history of early 20th century missions mobilization and recruitment efforts and shows us how missions committees and mobilizers and evangelists today can learn from their groundbreaking efforts. What I found valuable is that it explores many reasons why it is difficult for passion for missions to take hold in post modernist era Western church. Identifying these core (some times hard to face) issues is the first step of dealing with them. Without acknowledging them the church will just spin its wheels wondering why no one gets excited about their "missions week." Clear and easy read. But with lots of things the church/campus ministry can apply.
