I, like most people first discovered the dynamic duo "Capital Cities" upon hearing their mega hit "Safe and Sound". At first I thought it was an okay poppy song. Then a second listen got me hooked and I wanted to hear more from them! They have this infectious sound and spark to their music. This is their time to shine and I hope they shine bright! I waited and waited for this debut album perfectly titled "In a Tidal Wave of Mystery" to finally be released. I just knew this duo would make it big. I hoped that the album would have more awesome tracks beyond "Safe and Sound" and I was glad to find out it did! Here is a track by track breakdown of the album.

1. Safe and Sound: The ultimate summer anthem of 2013, and hopefully years to come. This is such an awesome feelgood indie dance pop song. It's perfect. The synths, the vocals, the corny but great lyrics, and who could forget those infectious trumpets during the chorus? This song was destined to be a hit. The entire song is amazing and catchy, but my favorite part is this little segment between 1:15 and 1:30 in the song. I will never ever get tired of this tune!
2. Patience Gets Us Nowhere Fast: Nice upbeat synthpop song. The vocals are almost as infectious as "Safe and Sound". The chorus will make you sing along. The song has an 80s vibe to it. That seems to be happening a lot with recent music and I love it! The bridge around the halfway mark is simple but magical!
3. Kangaroo Court: I really like this song. It has this "Passion Pit" type thing going for it. The verses and chorus will get stuck in your head. There is a nice trumpet solo. I'm starting to love this duo and their soon to be iconic trumpet moments in their music.

Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, as Capital Cities, have decided that the best music ever made was done by all those synth-pop duos and bands that jumped out of the early eighties to create massively hooky singles with just a couple of keyboards and maybe a few added guests on the side. When they get it right, as they do on the earworm single "Safe and Sound," they rival the best of them. "In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery" works hard to maintain that level of infectiousness, and succeeds more often than not.

The bulk of "Mystery" bubbles with hooky synth-lines and danceable beats, while having a go at sunshine grooves. When a song about valuing your stereo more than your furniture winds into the disc ("I Sold My Bed But Not My Stereo" - what a great title), you get that Capital Cities are more into having fun than trying to say anything of import. Their one big experiment, "Farrah Fawcett Hair," playfully interjects samples from National Public Radio, a couple of verses via Andre 3000, and then drops a dubstep break in the middle. There's no denying the happy vibe of "Love Away" or "Patience Gets Us Nowhere Fast" as well.

I guess this is the current vogue as, even as I think of early Depeche Mide, OMD or Naked Eyes while listening to "In A Tidal Wave of Mystery," I also can't help but be reminded of more recent offerings from Phoenix, Passion Pit or the debut from MGMT. With those kind of comparisons in mind, "In A Tidal Wave of Mystery" is hardly mysterious at all. It's an enjoyable debut CD, with hopes that Merchant and Simonian can keep the good vibrations coming on future efforts.

I saw these guys when they opened for Imagine Dragons in Kansas City on June 28th, 2013 at Starlight Theater. I had never heard of them before and I wasn't sure what to expect. I got to say, if it wasn't already an outdoor venue with no roof they would have blown the roof off of that place. I was hooked after the first song they performed. By the end of their performance there wasn't a single person in the place that wasn't jumping around going crazy dancing like a 70's disco star living in the 80's. There were 5 bands that night and in my opinion they were the best performance of the night (yes, even better than the main act). None of the other bands were bad, it's just that Capital Cities was in a totally different category all by themselves. After seeing them live I came home and immediately bought the album from Amazon. If you love well written lyrics and music with a funky groovy techno beat then this album is a must buy. If you ever get a chance to see Capital Cities live in concert then you should drop everything and go! Only thing I'm upset about is that I paid $6.99 for the mp3 album just a few days ago and now it is only $5! Whatever, it was a steal at $6.99 and $5 is a no brainer. They really shouldnt be selling it for only $6.99 or $5. I would have easily paid way more for this album. It's just good music and that is hard to find now.

Just a good fun album. I rarely purchase new albums in vinyl but I bought this one specifically for the purpose of playing at a party. Just positive fun uplifting music with a good beat. Also good for doing chores. : )

As a former program director of a radio station I still keep an ear open for fresh new material.
This release is a breath of fresh air. Absolutely high on my list. Get it and you will not be disappointed.
