Dar Williams - "As Cool As I Am"

Biography

The initial idea came in a flash. Dar Williams was driving on an isolated highway, crossing from New York into Ontario, surrounded by frozen fields, silver trees, and empty sky, when inspiration struck.

“I thought, ‘I want to write a biker song!,’” Williams says with a laugh. “And then my second thought was, ‘I want to write an epic biker song.’ ... Read more in Amazon's Dar Williams Store

Editorial Reviews

In the Time of Gods, the ninth studio album from beloved singer-songwriter and long-time Razor & Tie mainstay Dar Williams is due for release on April 17, 2012.

Produced by Kevin Killen (who has worked with U2, Elvis Costello, and Peter Gabriel), and featuring a remarkable set of musicians including Larry Campbell, Charley Drayton, Gerry Leonard, and Rob Hyman, the new album is among the most evocative of Williams' career.

As Dar explains it, "I'm interested in power right now," she says. "I'm in my 40s, and I m shocked that the cafe conversations I had in my 20s 'Somebody has to do something!' are now my responsibility. I see people who are actually doing things that you always dreamed somebody would do, and I can help make that a reality. So the stakes are higher, in a good way, but you also see the shadow, the reckless behavior, where a person can lose it all in a weekend."

There's more energy, more optimism; I eagerly look forward to hearing much of it performed live. Richard Perrotti  |  4 reviewers made a similar statement

Dar Williams has been a fixture on the folk scene for so long that it is hard to believe how alive, how relevant, how beautiful her voice and songwriting have remained. Long after many acts succumb to idea exhaustion, she continues to put out vital music. "In the Time of Gods" comes right out of the gate with a stunning mid tempo track "I Will Remember Everything"--in the chorus, she harmonizes with herself, pure and aching, her vibrato reminding me of golden age Natalie Merchant. There is a determination in some of these songs ("The Light and the Sea", "I will Free Myself") that shows a lot of strength, a feeling of purpose and plan that marks DW's best work. Not all is seriousness, there is some uptempo in "Summer Child", although even that song has some serious undertones. Her musicianship is, as always, impeccable; the production full and dreamy without being overly slick. I think that the real strength of this record ultimately is the way that her voice has matured, gained power, and remained lovely and fresh. A strong record from a songwriter that keeps getting better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Totally Biased Review April 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I admit it, I love Dar Williams. Not just because she's an outstanding singer-songwriter, but also because our voices happen to mesh and I can actually sing and play along with most of her music without straining my old vocal chords or arthritic fingers. Perhaps even more importantly though, I have unashamedly been interested in Dar ever since I found out we both grew up in Chappaqua, NY and graduated from the same Horace Greeley High School... go Quakers! Of course I graduated in 1964, a few years before she was born, but nevertheless I feel as though I knew her, and that helps me to relate to her lyrics, many of which seem to speak of her childhood. And speaking of lyrics, I have to admit that whenever I first hear a song, I listen to the music in order to figure out how to play it on my guitar. I usually notice the lyrics only later after I can play it reasonably well. With Dar's CDs that is like a gift that keeps on giving. I buy her CDs, enjoy the music for a while, and then get excited about them all over again when I discover what she's actually singing about! So far, I find "In the Time of the Gods" to be musically very appealing. It might well become my favorite Dar CD, but then the fun will begin all over again when I finally listen to the words. Thanks Dar, thank you very much.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice album but not Dar's best November 26, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dar Williams is probably my favorite female singer-songwriter, but I don't think this effort ranks among her better albums. The songs are well written but nothing on here really grabs me or speaks to me like some of her earlier work. If you are new to Dar, try one of her earlier efforts, such as My Better Self, Out There Live, End of the Summer, etc and you will be blown away.
