Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the first album in 10 years from the reunited Country/Rock outfit led by Raul Malo. Again drawing on myriad influences - from Buck Owens' tonk to Roy Orbison's heartbreak, Ravel's eroticism to Buena Vista Social Club's infectious rhythms, Patsy Cline's brazen emotion and that little Mavericks' magic. For their first sessions in almost a decade, it was spontaneous combustion; literally, the band falling into step with the euphoria they were known for. And they built quite an album from there. ''It took life for us to get to this point everybody was so free. From the first notes, it sounded like an explosion of sound; we went where the songs took us with a singularity of purpose. We came in to make music as grown-ups, to make music as men.'' Raul Malo (lead singer)

If you like your country crooned by a velvety voice, kissed by occasional horns and spiced with Latin flavor, then the latest Mavericks CD is just your style. The genre-defying band returns with an energetic album filled with neo-traditional songs, including a few that I wish Patsy Cline could’ve sung. The opener and my favorite is ‘Back in Your Arms Again,’ a pure old-school country toe-tapper with that spicy Latin ingredient that the Mavs sprinkle in to perfection. ‘That’s Not My Name’ is another old-school track that sounds like a Cline gem from the 1960s. The insistent ‘Lies’ (which reminds me a little of old Elvis songs ‘Little Sister and ‘Feel So Bad), the smooth first single ‘Born to Be Blue’ and the passionate ‘Come Unto Me’ are all highlights on the 14-song CD. Of course, for those who like when lead singer Raul Malo (a kind of Latino Orbison) croons, there are at least three slow-burning torch songs. All in all, this Mavs’ CD is on par with their other outstanding albums, including ‘What A Crying Shame,’ ‘Music for All Occasions’ and the criminally underappreciated ‘Trampoline.’

Having been a fan of The Mavs for 20 years, and a big fan of lead singer, Raul Malo, during his solo years after the band broke up, I was pretty excited when I heard about their reunion. I expected to like the new tunes. I did not expect it to blow me away. This album of genre bending music is off the charts. The eclectic mix of retro rock/alt country with an undercurrent of Latin/Tex-Mex is an amazing collection of songs. Even though the main theme is heartbreak, the album has a mostly uplifting sound. It is impossible to sit quietly while listening. Raul's vocals are richer than ever...in fact, I believe he is the finest male vocalist ever. The band is amazingly tight. The accordian playing (by Michael Guerra) is outstanding and enhances the music. I purchased both the CD and vinyl album and I really love the organic sound, particularly in the vinyl. Cannot wait until the tour begins. 10 stars!

I am so glad these guys are back together and sharing their talent with the rest of us once again. This album is full of the sounds I love from their past albums, but it's not the same thing over again. Bravo, guys!!!

If I had to describe this CD with one word - it would be "INTENSE". Every phrase, every note, every beat is intense. The up-tempo rockabilly/Tejano/polka/bar rock/bar country stuff is intense, with each beat hammered. The ballads are intense, with smoldering emotions underlying every note. And the most intense? The song "Call Me When You Get To Heaven". The lyrics seem to be about someone who has lost their love, for whatever reason, and offers the opportunity to get back together in the afterlife. This starts as a simmering, slow tango and builds, builds, and builds some more...the sensuous nature of this song defines sexual tension. And Raul Malo sings the bejeesus out of it.

A couple of the songs sound like really old Mavericks tunes, just enhanced - "Back in Your Arms Again" has the traditional Mavericks two-step country beat, with a spaghetti Western guitar, and then...some flamenco trumpets. "Lies" sounds a cross between a Beatles song and the old Mavericks standard "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down." "Born to Be Blue" is a Roy Orbison song for the 2010s. "Come Unto Me" has a fast Latin beat and accordian and trumpet solos. And so on. And the songs are all about love and relationships, making it easy to relate to.

You can tell with every listen that the band really got into this one. The intensity comes from selling themselves in every song. And there's enough catchy hooks and musical variety to make this a very pleasing disc. It has everything I need in a great CD - hooks, musicianship, meaningful lyrics, and a variety to the sound. Splendid.

Well worth the wait. Raul Malo has reunited with The Mavericks and we are all better off for it. I wish I knew how to write a proper cd review, but I don't. Even if I did, I don't think it would help because these songs sail right past that analytical part of the brain and resonate with something deeper. All I can say is if you're a fan of The Mavericks and/or Raul Malo, buy this cd and you won't be disappointed. If you've never heard of them but like Americana/Country/Alt music, go ahead and buy it was well. It's just great music made thoughtfully and carefully by great musicians, and you can't go wrong with that.

The Miami-bred, genre-defying "country" band reunites after a 10-year hiatus with some of their best work. A valentine to the faithful, the disc kicks things off with the infectious two-step "Back in Your Arms Again." The standout spaghetti western "Come Unto Me" (a Spanish version closes the disc) was rolled out as part of an EP in 2012, but anyone afraid that the rest of the disc was just filler needn't have worried. Other standouts include the wistful "In Another's Arms" and "Call Me When You Get to Heaven." If this doesn't make you want to "Dance in the Moonlight," well, then, there's something wrong with you. Keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden, once an "unofficial" member of the group, joins founders Raul Malo, Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin, along with guitarist Eddie Perez. Let's hope the follow-up doesn't take another decade.
