From Booklist

Goodman’s (True to the Law, 2013) latest Bitter Springs, Wyoming, romance delves into family bonds in the Old West. When red-haired rancher Morgan Longstreet advertises back east for a wife, Jane Middlebourne, the unwanted, orphaned relative of a wealthy family in New York City, agrees to marry him. Her first surprises are his ginger hair and his tight-lipped attitude about his family; he is surprised by how she doesn’t look anything like the picture she sent, a picture her cousin surreptitiously substituted in Jane’s letter to him. Despite those glitches, they manage to get along and come together, each appreciating the other’s frankness and dry sense of humor, until Morgan’s long-forgotten brothers threaten to bring past trouble into the present. Goodman’s fans will be thrilled with this newest story, a solid romance which achingly depicts, in her laconic style, the unsettling beginnings of a mail-order marriage. Once again, her meticulous research, signature eye for the telling detail, and ear for humor in a desperate time shine. --Pat Henshaw

Review

Praise for In Want of a Wife:
"Goodman makes a dazzling return trip to 1891 and the town of Bitter Springs, Wyoming.... in this page-turning historical that slyly pays tribute to Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Jane Middlebourne, the orphaned daughter of missionaries, longs to flee her bleak life in New York City. She agrees to be the mail-order bride of rancher Morgan Longstreet. Morgan is hoping for a sturdy wife who can help him run his ranch, so he’s shocked by the delicate-looking woman who steps off the train. While at first the pairing seems incongruous, Jane and Morgan rapidly learn that opposites can attract, and Morgan finds that Jane is feistier than he gave her credit for being. But when Morgan’s past comes back to haunt them, it could have consequences for the entire town, leading to a dramatic and engrossing finish. This first-rate tale easily measures up to its predecessors and will make readers eager for their next visit to Bitter Springs." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“A tender, engaging romance…a totally compelling read.” –Library Journal (starred review)

"*sigh* This author remains one of my absolute favorites. She can write the hell out of a book. I read her work and feel like she values my intelligence as a reader." --Fiction Vixen
"Jo Goodman is a master storyteller and one of the reasons I love historical romance so much....The Last Renegade is an outstanding historical western ...Even if American historicals aren’t your cup of tea, Goodman’s writing is brilliant enough to convince you otherwise. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!" --The Romance Dish

In Want of a Wife was so one of those reads I just didn't want to give up! Seriously yall I was glued to my book the whole time as Jane leaves her life on the east coast to marry a man who placed an ad for a wife. One she's written to but never met until now and will be making a life with--good, bad and unexpected.

I really liked Jane and Morgan. They're not what the other was expecting but they really complimented each other nicely. They both have a strength and resilience to themselves you can't help but admire and root for. Her sassy nature pulled him out of his shell and his protectiveness gave her security and home for the first time. It wasn't perfect and uncertainties cropped up on both ends but it felt real and right seeing them together.

Some parts are awkward between them and some sweet as the two tried to come to grips with their new lives and suddenly being married to a virtual stranger. You could really feel how they felt as things progressed. How they wanted to make things work but struggled with doing and saying the right things now and again. I don't know. I just found it achingly sweet watching them make the best of an awkward situation. and ended up teary eyed and choked up in more than one spot over them.

I loved watching these two grow with each other and become better people. The steamy scenes were nice (though they could be awkward as well but it was fitting for the situation). It's a slow building romance and storyline but it held me completely and I easily fell head over heels for Bitter Springs, Morgan and Jane, and the people who became a part of their lives. It was a touchingly sweet read with dry humor, heart and a wonderful romance. I'll definitely read more from Goodman. My only quip here was that sometimes dialogue was a little too formal instead of using contractions and it made things just a little stilted. But other than that a fantastic read.

As always, Jo Goodman writes a wonderful historical western romance, with grit and drama worthy of any western romance enthusiast. Her writing is crisp, filled with local flavor and eccentricities that any might find for that day and age. Jane Middlebourne was never wanted in her aunt's life and the only friend she had was her cousin, Alexander. Through some scheming and trickery, she's able to leave New York City by answering the ad of a Wyoming rancher, Morgan Longstreet, who was in Want of a Wife. Arriving in Bitter Springs, Wyoming, they confront each other with a startling realization that stems from some error in communication. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, they decide to make a go of it. However, Morgan has a past that isn't quite content to leave him alone. He has scars that run deep from what I would call childhood abuse, even though it is different than the type of abuse Jane suffered, it is apparent that these two wounded souls need each other. When his past returns with a vengeance, Morgan and Jane must use everything they've learned to get out alive.

I always enjoy Jo Goodman's western historicals and these set in Bitter Springs are a wonderful collection of characters that keep returning in every new book she writes. I still love reading about Cobb, Tru and the boys, Finn and Rabbit, who really have a limelight in this one. All in all, this romance is a love story of healing broken spirits and finding a new life in spite of the old ones.

Quick Summary
Jane Middlebourne needs a way out of New York City. As the ward of a distant cousin, she's destined for a lonely life of servitude. Morgan Longstreet recently bought a ranch in Bitter Springs and needs a wife to help him manage Morning Star. When Jane answers his ad for a bride, he believed he'd found the perfect solution for both of them.

The conflict
When Morgan sees Jane in person, he doesn't mask his disappointment because he thinks she's not going to be tough enough to withstand the rugged life on a ranch in Wyoming. Jane's discouraged as she'd hoped to find a willing partner in Morgan, in time developing affection for one another.

The heart of the story
I love western historicals and this was one of the most authentic stories I've read in the genre for quite some time. There was no instant love here and ranch life is tough. Morgan's not an easy man and he doesn't mask his feelings around Jane. She's well educated and forthright, which made them surprisingly a good match. He's not educated but extremely bright and savvy, though very reticent. Both had complicated pasts and Morgan's resurfaced to wreak havoc in a major way.

Narration
Unfortunately, this was the weakest part of my reading experience. The narrator didn't seem to have a sense of the tone of the story or understand the characters. I couldn't tell when Morgan was being clever or caustic because no distinctions were made. Most of the performance sounded rote, almost as if it was computer generated. It just didn't work for me and I had to go back and read the prologue from the sample to understand what turned out to be a critical passage.

The bottom line
I enjoyed the story in spite of my issues with the narration.
