Product Description

Product Description

In this game, each player takes on the role of a Chinese prince, seeking to maximize the prosperity and prestige of his province in the ancient China of approximately 1,000 A.D. To assist in these endeavors, the princes must call upon the diverse talents of their courtiers, from scholars and monks to warriors and craftsmen. These loyal subjects will lend their expertise to the struggle to shield their rulers from the often disastrous consequences of the myriad untoward events that plague the populace from month to month. Be it drought, contagion or Mongol invasion, only foresight and planning will spare the princes and their subjects from these fates. The better a player can manage his province and withstand the seemingly unending onslaught of hazardous events, the more honor and victory points he will have to show for it in the end.

In the year of the Dragon is an oddly punishing but well designed game that belongs in any Eurogame player's collection. Good play balance, interesting timing and structural choices - and it isn't artless nor visually ugly like so many other Euros. If you are not a Eurogame fan, this may be a little dry and be warned: this is a no luck/no dice/all strategy game.

There are enough elements in the game to make it quite interesting and different. It is not difficult to learn.
As in any game, if you don't like something, make your own rule! But this game is fine as is. We play it often.

I quite like this game, there's nothing else in my collection like it. The gameplay is simple enough to teach quickly, almost anybody can pick it up, and some of the mechanics are quite original. I especially like the person track that determines play order and the balance between younger and older person tiles and how it relates to moving along the person track.

This is almost a game just of damage control. The game will kick your butt from beginning to end, there is no way to completely mitigate all the negative events. And even if you could then you wouldn't be scoring points...which of course is how you win the game. Every round is tense as you try to balance number of palaces, 9 different person tiles, money, position on the person track, mitigating events, and scoring points. You can also play this game a different way every time and still win. The components are also stylish and attractive and the theme is pretty persistent and interesting.

I like the tension and brutality of this game because it is never just one player who is the victim of it but unfortunately that is exactly what might keep this game from hitting the table as often as I'd like. Not everyone likes to be beat up by their games, whether they have company or not.

I've played this three times, all on the same day. Each time I played a different strategy while observing others also experimenting and mastering multiple strategies. The game board is designed to change with each game with an initial shuffle of the cards. I am very excited to get this stimulatingly complicated game.

Great new strategy game. Variant on games like Puerto Rico, San Juan, etc. Defined end point, so it predictably takes a bit over an hour to play. For game players of above average sophistication.
