Book Description

Book 1 of the In Your Dreams series.

Sixteen-year-old Zara “Zip” McKee lives for three things: basketball, books, and bailing out of tiny Titusville, Illinois, where the junior high and high school are in the same building and everyone’s known everyone else since birth. But when Kieran Lanier moves to town and passes out on her desk on his first day at school, Zip’s life gets complicated in a way she never dreamed.

Kieran has narcolepsy, and although he sometimes struggles to stay awake, he has no trouble capturing Zip’s heart and trusting her with his most guarded secret—he sees bits and pieces of the future in his dreams. And while he didn’t know who she was at the time, Kieran had seen Zip in his dreams over five months before he moved to Titusville from North Carolina.

But just when Zip thinks that maybe she can handle having a boyfriend who sees things before they happen, her budding relationship with Kieran gets a jolt. She and Kieran learn that his sleeping disorder and the future flashes were likely caused by a drug invented by his birth father, Morgan Levert, a convicted felon who plays a starring role in Kieran’s nightmares. And when Zip begins to have unsettling dreams after chance encounters with Morgan's former partner-in-crime, she must decide if she can live with the possibility of seeing the future when she doesn’t always like what she sees.

*Recommended for Young Adult readers 13 and up (mild cursing, some adult situations)

Review

2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-finalist in Young Adult Fiction

"I was completely hooked from the first couple of pages of this book. I really loved the writing style and Zip was a character I was drawn to instantly. [...] Instead of using magic the book sticks to scientific and medical reasons to explain what's going on. I won't go into it in too much detail but it meant the book kept that contemporary/realistic feeling which I really liked. It was a completely fresh approach and made it stand out from a lot of other books I've read." -Total Teen Fiction

"Amy Martin is an amazing writer, the writing easily created a clear picture in my mind as I read, and the storyline flowed really well. This is one author that definitely knows what she's doing! [...] In Your Dreams has a lot of mystery, thrill, romance and shockers that are all laced together to make this amazing story. I was intrigued until the very end, and was really sad when it ended."-Addicted to Novels

5.0 out of 5 stars great female heroine July 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Amy Martin's first book in a young adult trilogy brings us the story of Zip, a 16 year-old basketball playing girl from a small town who befriends the new boy when he falls dead asleep on her in class on his first day.

Kieran Lanier has to live with the fact that he falls asleep when he gets stressed. Now he's 18 and a senior in high school and the new kid in a small town, and he passes out within minutes of sitting down in his first class. Oh, and he also dreams the future, recognizing Zip as literally the girl of his dreams.

Zip finds herself caring for Kieran and together they look for a reason for his blackouts. They find more than they bargain for as Kieran starts to uncover his mysterious past.

In Your Dreams is a fun teen novel, and Amy Martin truly understands the teen mind. Her dialogue is spot-on as her characters go about their lives worrying about such things as proms and who's dating who.

Martin gives the reader just the right mix of action and emotion in her characters, making the reader care about them, which makes for a compelling novel.

Since this is the first in a trilogy staring Zip McKee and the Kieran the boy with the mysterious sleeping sickness that she cares about, I'm sure we'll learn more about Kieran's disease while the love story continues.

A boy like Kieran who can dream the future, would prove invaluable to certain people, so I'm sure the action and suspense will only continue to tighten around this exciting couple.

I really enjoyed the strong female lead in the story. Zip is not the kind of girl who waits for things to happen to her, but instead willingly goes after what she wants.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Your Dreams November 3, 2012
By Marina
Format:Paperback
Wow, I am still in shock from this book. After I finished it, it took me a couple of days to really think about it and absorb it, for all its worth.
Synopsis: "In Your Dreams", tells the story of a highschool basketball ball star Zip Mckee who befriends a new student named Keiran Lanier, soon she finds out that Keiran has a dark secert that goes along with a dark past. Keiran catches glimpses of the furture through a sleeping disorder called Narcolepsy. And when Zip start getting weird dreams about the future it is up to her to save Keiran from his dark past that is much closer than anyone thinks.
My Thoughts: This was a beautiful novel. It was nothing like anything that I have before. I thought that there was alot of character growth in the book, which is something that I find is really important. You can see the characters mature as the book progresses as well as how unexpected the relationships that form in the book are.
This book always kept me on my toes, I never could predict what would happen next. The many predictions that I had predicted as I was reading were far from what actually happened in the book. Which made me want to come back and read the book. It was almost as if it was drawing me to it.
I loved the novels plot, the idea of a boy with narcolepsy (sleeping disorder) being able to see glimpses of the future was mind blowing, I have never heard of such idea and it was very nice to have a new twist in paranormal romance. I also loved that although the plot explored romance between the two characters, it was also completely 100% action packed, which in most paranormal romances there isn't a huge portion of action.

3.0 out of 5 stars definitely interesting.... October 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Zip McKee lives in a small rural town in Illinois and is a junior who can't wait to get out, when the Laniers move in next door. Now that handsome dark-haired Kieran is her neighbor, she doesn't know what she wants. But Kieran has a secret, he sometimes dreams the future, and a dark past, one that Zip isn't sure she's ready to hear.

This story is not my usual cup of tea, and I'm still not sure that it is at all, but it was entertaining to say the least.

It was certainly a new concept. I don't believe I've ever read a book where one of the main characters suffers from narcolepsy. We've all heard about it, and possibly even joked about it, but I had never really thought about the difficulties of having such a condition. Throughout the story, we watch Zip and Kieran navigate the ups and downs of resulting circumstances and learn about his tragic past that made him this way.

I gave it 3 stars, but I think my expectations would have been different had I not found it in a paranormal book discussion group. Yea, the guy does dream vague snippets of the future, but a lot of us do, hence our sense of déjà vu sometimes. It may not happen in the frequency it does for Kieran, nor may we remember it, but it does happen, often enough that I don't really consider this paranormal.

Unfortunately I also found the ending a bit anti-climatic. Without giving any spoilers, I felt that things were just a little too conveniently wrapped up with just one conversation. So much so, that by the time I got to the last page, I was surprised to see the implication of a possible second book, stating this was just the end of book one, when I had walked away feeling like it was a stand alone.
