Editorial Reviews

In Your Dreams is Nicks' first CD of new material since the release of her Grammy nominated Trouble in Shangri-La ten years ago. In Your Dreams was written and recorded at Nicks' Los Angeles home and is co-produced by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Nicks and Stewart co-wrote seven of the album's thirteen songs. "I had written a song in Brisbane, Australia when I was on tour with Fleetwood Mac in 2009 called 'Moonlight - A Vampire's Dream' which was inspired by the New Moon film. When I finished writing that song, which came together really quickly, I knew the time was right to start recording. We had a core group of five people who were at the heart of the creation of In Your Dreams. Dave and myself, my longtime friend and musical director, Waddy Wachtel, and my girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks. It was a perfect blend,"" commented Nicks. "This was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've had making a record. It is the first album that I have had this kind of collaboration since the making of Rumours. Dave created a situation where I could be totally creative and focused on writing songs and making music. I cannot remember ever having this much fun making a record. Writing the songs and recording them in my home studio was the key element in how this music turned out. It made the whole process seem very similar to how we used to work back in the day," she concluded.

The first single is "Secret Love" written by Nicks. "It was 1976 and Fleetwood Mac was opening for Peter Frampton at the time. It was written about a forbidden relationship - not Peter and I," laughed Nicks. "I always knew that one day I was going to record the song."

Nicks is currently gearing up to join forces with fellow rocker Rod Stewart for the 16 city Heart & Soul Tour, one of the most anticipated music events of the year.

Stevie Nicks' first album of new material in a decade, "In Your Dreams", is among the best things she's done. It's not like her other albums in any way and that's what makes it so great. It's a whole different sound for Stevie. Some artists go off and do "theme" albums in their career, be it a dance or covers album or in the 70's for instance everyone did a disco album at some point. And that's what this is for me, a total change of pace. It can't be compared to her previous albums because it's nothing like those albums. "In Your Dreams" is a breath of brand new air from Stevie. I've always felt that "Bella Donna" was Stevie's masterpiece, and it remains so, but "In Your Dreams" is also a masterpiece but painted in a very different style with very different colors. The stand out tracks are:
"In Your Dreams" ~ I have a feeling Stevie really likes this song and I bet this ends up in the set this summer. It's just one of those fast up tempo songs that she likes doing on stage.

"New Orleans" ~ Starts off slow, but then the chorus kicks in and it blooms.

"Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)" ~ This is where the album kicks in for me. The beginning is taken from an old demo fans have had for years called "Lady From The Mountain" and she sings it almost exactly like the demo in the whisper like voice. She's turned a lot of older beloved demos into full-fledged songs lately and some of them didn't work, "Smile At You", "Goodbye Baby", but this one does. The new lyrics added to the original track really complete and fit the song.

"Annabel Lee" ~ This was demo'd for 2001's "Trouble In Shangri-La" but didn't make the cut. Music by Stevie, lyrics based on the poem By Edgar Allan Poe. Stevie and Poe seem to be a match made in heaven.

Ok, first thing, I'm a Gen Y Stevie Nicks keep that in mind...

I bought the album and listened to it with the realization that this is all new material, so I probably would not like it right away, so I promised myself that I would listen to it twice all the way through back to back before I picked 'my' songs.

I'm really happy I gave it that second shot...
My first observation on the second time around, is that the songs are in two parts each. The first is a sort of extended intro where Stevie tells the story she's writing about. Then the actual, what you might call 'song', begins.

This is where this albums true colors SHINE.

I bought this album this morning and have been listening to it all day, and it just keeps getting better. I'm finding new levels to each song every time I hear it.

This is her best solo work since "The Wild Heart"

A must to be sure, but keep in mind that it's all new material, stuff we've never heard before...And you MUST listen to it two times in a row, back to back, if you want to 'get it'.

It's been 10 years since Stevie Nicks last released an album, and it was well worth the wait! Her vocals are powerful and ageless, her intricate storytelling is enchanting, and the poetry is abundant and beautiful. "Secret Love" was written in 1976 and is about one of her rock star romances, but she coyly maintains she can't remember which one. The ballad "Italian Summer" is an over the top seduction, which climaxes in typical Nicks fashion: "Love was everywhere/You just had to fall." "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)" was inspired by the Twilight series and sets a mysterious and gothic mood to perfection. "Annabel Lee" is a masterpiece tribute to Edgar Allen Poe; it's a 6 minute thesis on love and death that echoes the Fleetwood Mac classic "Dreams." On "New Orleans" she recalls her eternal desire to "wear feathers and lace", while "Soldier's Angel" finds her intoning ominously about war. Overall the strength and sincerity of Nicks' songs make this just another reason to love and respect her, and I'd highly recommend this new collection of songs to anyone!!!

Like many others here, I have been a passionate Stevie fan since that day I first heard her voice on the radio in 1976. And when I say passionate, I mean it. My daughter's name is Rhiannon. Enough said.

But I was skeptical about this album. I don't know if it was the Twilight reference, the Twitter account and Facebook page (come on people, anyone who knows and loves Stevie knows she hates Twitter, Facebook and computers in general) or if it was just that I was not moved by the song samples. Or maybe it was the Dave Stewart connection, having never been a fan of Eurythmics. But like the devoted fan that I am,I ordered my CD. But I didn't even open it the day it came. I hate to say it, but I was not expecting to even like this album and I don't think I even wanted to like it. Twilight, Twitter, Facebook, really? I was just not feeling it.

Well, I was wrong and all of you were right. It is beautiful. It's not like anything else she's ever done, yet I love it anyway. While I don't hear what I loved in Edge of Seventeen, Gold Dust Woman, Planets of the Universe, or Rhiannon ~ I hear something more soulful and moving than ever before. It's really hard to describe ~ but it's amazing. As a collection of music ~ of art really ~ it is probably the best work she has ever done. It's Stevie enough to satisfy the die hard fans ~ yet different enough to bring her in touch with a whole new group of fans.

Rock on Gold Dust Woman ~ you've created a masterpiece.

Songs on the new album
I think Cheaper Than Free suits her voice well, and while some of the lyrics are a bit cliche, a few others have very deep meaning. Overall, I think the song has heart+soul, and represents her well at this stage in her life.

'In Your Dreams' getting excellent reviews
Look, nobody's opinion of a piece of music is any more valid than another's. It's ridiculous to be combative about it. I love this album, and feel it's some of Stevie's best work. If another Stevie fan dislikes it, I'm certainly not gonna get angry, but I am curious to hear his/her opinion on it.
