Decent projector for the money,

This review is from: InFoucs IN104 Portable DLP Projector, 3D ready, XGA, 2700 Lumens (Office Product)
I'll start with the "PROS"**It is lightweight compared to other similarly priced projectors. **The lamp is incredibly bright, similar to what I would expect with a home theatre class type projector. **The construction does not feel cheap. It feels solid in your hands and **when you flip it over or pick it up suddenly you don't hear and joints or seams creaking like you do with some cheaper built plastic chassis projectors. **The outside looks nice, is easy to clean and is firm to the touch. **The controls are extremely fool-proof. **The "keystone correction" is great. No matter how high up, or down **There are a lot of "modes" from blackboard to beige wall to white board to video to ultra bright. These might seem like silly extra perks, but they are truly invaluable in helping you get it set up to look great FAST. **The definition for images up to 4-5 feet wide is INCREDIBLE. Extremely high definition with incredible contrast. When you pull it back from the wall to go for something like a 6 foot wide image you will will notice fairly dramatic declines in definition, but the colors still look GREAT! bright and VIVID **Lots of plug ins for VGA plugs. No HDMI. I believe it can take up to three VGA plus and has a VGA OUT plug as well, so if you are using a desktop monitor, you can have what ever is showing on your monitor also show on a monitor. It will let you bypass the projector when in conjuction with a CPU and let you continue to use your desktop monitor, your CPU, and all while projecting whatever your CPU or other device is telling it to. Very nice feature I didn't expect for this price. **Decent speaker. Not incredible. Good considering the money. **Nice free little carrying bag and remote control (with batteries!) **Last and not least, this projector has TWO fans and they are both incredibly quiet no matter WHAT mode it is in. They are also obviously quite effecient as well because when you turn the unit off the fans only need to run for about another 60 seconds to get the unit totally cool to the touch and then they power down as well. The "CONS" **While it does have keystone correction it is only vertical, not horizontal. So you need to make sure when you are projecting that the projector is parallel with the wall. No horizontal keystone correction here. **This is the opposite of a "short throw" or "ultra short throw" . This device is very much LONG LONG THROW. To get the size of image I was looking for I needed to have this projector about 12-17 feet away from the wall. **When the IN104 is on it puts out QUITE a bit of heat. As I said though, the fans do a great job with keeping it cool. I assume it throws off so much heat b/c, for a projector in this price range, the lamp really puts out a LOT of light. **As I said before, you need to get this thing pretty darn far away from the wall to get a nice big projection. The issue with that then is, a lot of your audience will probably be somewhere between the wall, and the projector. This is NOT the place to be as this thing has a CRAZY INTENSE rainbow effect. I am normally not too sensitive to the RBE, but when I looked back this projector when it was projecting the Disney movie "Tinkerbell" I thought I was tripping some major acid. It was totally psychodelic to look back at the unit in the middle of movie play. If super bright flickering light rapidly changing colors freaks you out, you might want to spend a little bit more money and step up a model to one of INFOCUS "short throw" projectors so you can keep that RBE in between the wall and the projector without YOU in the middle of it. **The fans on this unit are big and powerful, and quiet to boot, but because of that, this unit SPILLS a fairly substantial amount of light out of the fan ducts. To me it is not distracting, but if you are really wanting a DARK DARK room for a home theatre, it might be annoying. **While the control panel is efficient, it is also VERY SPARTAN! This unit is all about just SOLID BASICS and not about lots of really cool bonus features. **No autofocus, which again, for this price range might be expected. The manual focus includes a fast action "course" and "fine" focus though that is extremely easy to use to get a nice focus within about 5-10 seconds of initial focus manipulation. Overall I would say this is great projector for the money. I am a public senior high math teacher and I think this will be great for use in a fairly bright room as the lamp is really powerful, however, the fact that I need such a LONG THROW distance to get the image up to the right size is frustrating, and in hind sight I wish I had spent about 300-400 more dollars and gotten the same projector with a "ultra short throw" bulb and with a few bonus features to boot on one of Infocus higher level models. As a projector for a large business/conference room it would be great. For a large classroom it would be great. For a small classroom/conference room I would not reccommend this unit. For a home theatre for just a little bit of extra fun, in a nice big living room, I would reccommend it, however for a small bedroom or small basement room, no way no way. The colors are incredible, the definition is superb, and even with fast action video I found there to be very little "motion blur" which is typically something that PLAGUES projectors in this price range. All and all I would say it is the heart and guts of a unit twice the price, in a spartan wrapper, minus some of the nice bonus features you might want if you were willing to spend twice the price. I give the unit an average of "4" stars considering features and performance for the buck!

The price and ease of use are excellent.I used this projector with my Macbook at our family reunion to show heritage DVDs I made. We also played movies to keep the youngsters occupied. It worked great. Good picture. The sound we used was an amp my husband uses for his music gigs, attached to the laptop. Very satisfied with the product.

Bought this thinking that the remote controlled PowerPoint slide shows. The projector arrived before the estimated delivery date--which is when I realized it did not have that feature. If you don't need that feature (I'll accept blame for not researching it better!), this seems to be a pretty well made (albeit basic) projector. I called their customer service for info--the person I talked to was very helpful and knowlegable. I was impressed. I returned the unit and purchased a different one, again, on Amazon.

I've had this projector about a month. I use it five days a week as a ceiling mounted projector in a school classroom (math instruction, mostly PowerPoint). I love it. It's quieter and brighter than my previous projector (which was about six years old). For the price/features it was a good buy. I recommend it, especially if your main purpose is business/instructional presentations.

Great clarity even in moderate room ligting conditions. The only issue is the bag supplied with the unit is WAY too SMALL to hold the power cords, remote and projector. You know... 5 pounds of stuff in a 3 pound bag!

This unit is easy to use and reliable. I have only about a hundred hours on it so time will tell how long the bulb will last. But so far so good.

I did some shopping for AV projectors and the InFoucs IN104 seemed to have some of the better reviews in the price range that I was looking to purchase. The projector arrived well packed and contained all the cords and case needed to setup immediately. I purchased this projector for my wife who is not the most technically inclined but in spite of this she had no problem setting it up and really likes it (win for me). I would have given it a "5" but I have not had it long enough to say it is "outstanding". At this point the only criticism I have is that the case seems a little thin to really protect the device; I would definitely recommend this for those who need a portable projector for presentation, displaying pictures, or an occasional movie.
